    Are we really used to blunt assertiveness at Indian workplaces? IMHO, this is true mostly of the more American influenced industries, such as IT and maybe new start ups. In the “old economy” industries I guess (perhaps?:-)) it is still people tiptoing around whatever they may consider sensitive…

      Good question! I had 2 extremes in mind – the government offices are still stuck with British standards and use archaic language that may beat around the bush. And we have the IT industry-inspired communication which seems largely impersonal and to the point…perhaps (!) a learning from US lingo (straight to the point).

    Interesting observation. And agree with how ‘perhaps’ can soften the tone and help facilitate key discussions. On a lighter note, it reminded me of the song ‘Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps’ where Mari Wilson wants her man to stop using the word. It’s also the theme song of the TV series Coupling.
