Imaan ka asar - Dor (Salim Sulaiman, Hindi)
Absolutely scintillating duet with Sunidhi and Shreya. This one grows on you like no other recent track. Salim Sulaiman rock the scene with this buoyant, cheerful song!

Tere bin - Bas Ek Pal (Mithoon, Hindi)
Atis Aslam. That says it all. That one voice carries this otherwise average track to dizzying heights.

New York Nagaram - Jillunu Oru Kaadhal (A R Rahman, Tamil)
Almost Sting-like. Rahman wisely chooses to sing this himself. The orchestration uncovers itself in beautiful layers adding to the charm of the track.

Doston - Iqraar By Chance (Sandesh Shandilya, Hindi)
Completely underrated. Kunal Ganjawala has a ball singing this song on friendship. This a very catchy and interestingly-tuned ditty.

Dheemi dheemi - Shiva (Ilayaraja, Hindi)
The tune & arrangement is vintage Ilayaraja. So is the mild Irish/ celtic sound in the interludes. Lilting and lovely, this one!

So jaaoon main - Woh Lamhe (Roop Kumar Rathod, Hindi)
He may have done just one track in this soundtrack but that one really stands tall as a original in front of the chartbusting/ lifted ‘Kya mujhe’.

Aaj ki raat - Don (Shakar Ehsaan Loy, Hindi)
The retro Bappi’ish arrangements and Alisha’s vocals make a huge impact in this track, that is clearly the highlight of this hyped soundtrack!

Karthik,

Fantastic one! Such posts help people listen to many brilliant unheard masterpieces. I listened to Dheemi Dheemi after reading your excellent and accurate review on Shiva and liked it so much that I recommended to many of my friends.

I listened to Doston after reading this post of yours and had you not posted this I would have missed perhaps the most youthful track released this year! Will give the Dor song a listen soon.

One thing good about you is that you know the difference between music and noise, and even though you are not a natively hindi speaking person you value lyrics and aren’t biased towards songs which are too south indian.

Keep up, you are the best!

I’m happy that you like Doston. Even ‘Saari saari’ from Iqraar is pretty unconventional & interesting. But given a choice, I’d recommend Doston.

About that natively Hindi part, I’ve spent a large part of my life in Bhopal, before moving down south. And since those were my formative years, my Hindi is very strong, right upto the pronunciation. And then of course, have been in Delhi for 5 years during my first and second job stints, before I moved down south again, to Bangalore.

I wouldnt dare to write about Hindi music/ lyrics if I cant speak/ understand Hindi :-)

totally off topic…i was watching pulp fiction recently, the title song misirlou seemed uncannily familiar to a few indian songs.. it kinda reminded me of mundrezhuthu song in paarthale paravasam…any thoughts on this?

Is Jaan-E-Mann review coming soon? I want to buy this because of Gulzar’s association but want to read a review or two before doing that.

Jaan-e-mann review should be up, hopefully by today evening! Check the IndiaFM review if you’re keen, in the meanwhile.

Speaking of lyrics, I have frequently preferred to listen to AR Rahman’s tamil versions (if the song had both tamil and hindi versions), since I don’t understand tamil at all, and the hindi lyrics were so cheesy I just couldn’t listen to them.

I agree. Most Rahman albums that have a Tamil source are largely transliterated. NO wonder they sound totally forced and ridiculous.
