Salaam-e-ishq (Hindi - Shankar, Ehsaan & Loy)

The catchily repetitive title song has Chopra-style written all over, while Saiyyan Re works well as an energetic new-age qawali. Ya rabba has Kailash in a pensive mood but doesn’t tax his vocal chords much. Adnan’s effortless rendition & a pleasant carribean’ish tune elevates Dil kya kare. The infectious techno shaadi track, Tenu leke has Sonu in his spirits. Babuji’s remix carries the unmistakable stamp of Instant Karma while Mera dil is a sweet track quite typical of the composers and Shaan! Salaam-e-ishq has an enjoyable mix, but for a nagging feeling that the trio’s music is getting mildly repetitive.

Keywords: Nikhil Advani, Akshaye Khanna, Ayesha Takia, Anil Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Salman Khan, Govinda, John Abraham, Vidya Balan

Though the music is nice and ear-friendly, I couldn’t stop myself from making referances to some of SEL’s songs while listening to the album. Guess they need to come up with some differently styled tunes or experiment with the orchestra otherwise soon they will become stale.

I felt that Javed Akhtar could have done a better job than Sameer, I wonder why didn’t SEL used his services here as lyrics of some songs are no different than what Sameer generally writes.

A pretty good album, much better than KANK.
Most importantly,The album is enjoyable.SEL have tried to innovate with their sound and by and large, have done well.

Yeah…even i got the feeling after listenin to the tracks that SEL’s music is becomin repetetive. The trailor was very catchy with the bagpiper instrument and so is the song. But i could easily remember Rock n Roll Soniye or Thats the way Mahive when listening to this track and Tenu Leke i guess..Nevertheless its a gud album, but i think SEL gives better music to Karan’s movies.

I dont understand what you mean by repetitive? The whole album is so not like a SEL album. And also, they’ve tried a lot different sounds and it really works. Rishi, I’d rather listen to an album like Salaam E Ishq which would most likely lift my spirit unlike the songs in Anwar, which most of the time are depressing. And Jemsheed, they’ve experimented with every track in the album, most notably Saiyaan Re, so I really dont know what you’re talking about.

If you want experimental, go listen to some of Rahman’s worthless albums. I dont find this album “repetitive” at all. Go listen to Pritam and Himesh Reshammiya albums and you’ll get a feel of what REPETITIVE is. Even if you guys feel SEL are repetitive, at least they deliver good music, unlike some of the useless composers we have in the industry.

Well, the fact that you both mentioned the Carribbean influence in Dil Kya Kare, which I think is sheer coincidence. And also, this line - “a sweet track quite typical of the composers and Shaan”. I certainly remember Joginder saying something like that too…

Oh that! Actually the word I wanted to use was Calypso, even though Carribean is appropriate since it gets a lot more flavor for this track.

That sweet track from Shaan part, had included ‘typical of the composers and peers like Vishal Shekar’, but my 100 word limit came in the way! More than SEL, I guess VS have a lot more of such sweet tracks notably by Shaan.

Chill Shez dude!I dont think Karthik needs to be influenced by someone else to write his 100 words. He’s pretty good at what he does and about that Carribean,If a guitar is used in a song,we have mention it as a guitar in any review,It wont change..Would it? :-)

am repeating,There is nothing new in this album.I dont know why this guys are arguing.Go for Anwar u will get 2 nice tracks(Maula,Tose naina),Go fro guru u will get(Terebina,Aye hairathe,Jage hain). What happened for Kyun ho gaya na, Laksya,KANK,DON.Only 1 or 2 songs are best thre..Title song startted very decently and it was exciting but when lines(lyrics) reaches it becam typical SEL song..
They r 3 in numbers..isnt it.?its sad non of them makes anything innovative…

On those lines, let me reinvent my last sentence like this,

Nikhil Advani seems to be still in the Karan Johar mode, while he also drags SEL along the same route. Result: You get yet another KJ-styled score that reeks of half a dozen other KJ camp films. But this one’s definitely better than KANK, IMO.

Guys, I think SEL have to show a hint of a song from their first movie “Kuch Na Kaho”.. The tabla beat in the title song matches the title song of SEI. Even one song sounds like a Bunty Babli inspiration..

FYI, it was Advani who brought SEL into the KJ camp. KJ wanted Jatin-Lalit for KHNH but it was Advani who insisted that SEL be the composers. And after KJ had his little catfight with Jatin-Lalit, he started takin SEL for his films. So technically, we got a Nikhil Advani score in KANK.

Point taken. But you do know how people like Subash Ghai, Yash Chopra or KJ get involved in their productions? And how similar in terms of sound and variety was the score of KANK, despite the fall out between KJ and NA?

So, perhaps, the sound that evolved from SEL for KHNH was a combination of NA and KA’s sensibilities, which, besides being carried in KANK, now becomes SEL’s trademark sound in SEI!

Aaw, these shortened versions…. :-)

I know its really late to bump into this thread but I was wondering Karthik, do you prefer Composers to who never copy or composers who lift repetitively? Just wondering.
BTW I think that was a very different SEL album, i mean most music composers dont use a bagpipe. I have only heard Anu Malik and Shankar Jakishan use it before. Isn’t it different to use a bagpipe? Also SEL’s songs have influenced other composers. A.R. Rahman’s song Tere Bina in Guru resembles SEL’s Aao Naa from Kyun Ho gaya naa. ( Dum tara Dum tara mast mast- Re sa ni ni sa ni..)
Hey but Karthik I really like this website. I mean your efforts to get all these songs shows that you are passionate about your music. I just wanted to point what the bias some people were talking about.

I just like composers doing their jobs sincerely. Lifting is almost like a state of mind - in fact if I was not aware of the original of say, Kya mujhe pyaar hai, I’d have 2 opinions - that the song is amazing and that Pritam is an amazing composer.

What changes after the awareness of the original is only the second part which goes on to become, “well, he’s a good sound arranger, may be an average composer!”

Using a bagpipe is indeed very different. I’ve no issues with that. Just that the music in Salaam-e-ishq sounded quite monotonous to me, personally.

Music, in my opinion, is highly subjective. If it gives you happiness, no review should ever stop you from listening to it. But yes, as is the intention of this blog, we could always discuss on why you liked it and I didn’t so that I could learn a new way of appreciating music. Thats the best part!

One thing i have noticed with Indian composers is that if they are prolific, they either a) lift songs b) start getting monotonous. Pritam falls in the first category. SEL who really take care not to lift songs have become slightly monotonous. I still look forward to both Pritam’s and SEL sounttracks.

Yeah I was just wondering about your opinion on Indian composers. ( I didn’t really mean to attack your opinion) Of course you can keep your opinions on the music of SEL. Thanks for the reply. I too listen to and wait for SEL, Pritan, VS and Mithoon’s tracks as they are usually quite interesting to listen to. Man if only songs like Kya mujhe pyaar hain and tu hi meri shab hai were actually composed by an Indian composer, that would have totally changed my view of Pritam.
