Tough choice, but here’s the top 10 of what I liked in Tamil film songs, in 2006. And yes, this is in the order of my preference - don’t want to hide under the ‘not-in-any-particular-order’ pretext.

01. Sudum Nilavu - Thambi, Vidyasagar

02. Munbe vaa - Sillunu oru kaadhal, A R Rahman

03. Thaiyatha - Thiruttu Payale, Bharadwaj

04. Koligundu kannu - Em Magan, Vidyasagar

05. Nilavai sutri - Madhu, Ilayaraja

06. Kangal Theduthe - Manathodu Mazhaikkaalam, Karthikraja

07. Manjal veyil - Vettayaadu Vilayaadu, Harris Jeyaraj

08. Urugudhey - Veyil, G V Prakash Kumar

09. Loosu penne - Vallavan, Yuvan Shankar Raja

10. Dei namma - Pattiyal, Yuvan Shankar Raja

Interesting to see you found some (non-existent) humor in the list. Glad to know that I made you laugh.

Karthik ,
Of course -This is ‘YOUR’ list .So nothing to critize here !!
Except for 9,10 all the other will find the places in ‘MY” Top 10 - Just the addition of the Oru Maatram from NaaLai ,and Oru Naalil from pudhupettai …

Karthik, I think we are doing this stuff every year. FOr a change.. would you mind writing down the most underrated tracks of the year too. It would be more interesting and help us unearth the real gems of this year.

I would like to nominate ‘Kanava Endru’ from Thambi for that list..

Karthik ,U check the song Sudum Nilavu and azhagana rakshasiye from Muthalvan(..Especially the interludes(the vocals)..), and first few lines of Dei namma and New title song.Yes these are the best 10 songs of the year 2006.But the order which u put ,uk know that i cant agree. But u r doing gud work man..Keep it up..
U told that after repeat hearing Rahman’s sound in Terebina of Guru is not that much Good.Actuaaly if the singer’s sound is bad we can understand that in first listening itself. But i didnt get u in that point.
Then kamraj’s Idea.The Worst songs.Thats a good idea.I nominate some Machakari,(SOK),Thazhuvathu(Anbae Aruyirae)…
These are my personal openion only

Kamaraj,

If Karthick writes the most under-rated tamil songs then he will have to create a very huge list of 100+ songs. Am i right Karthick?

This is where the quality of Tamil Music stands… :(

Karthick,

Thats a goodlist

What i personally feel is that you could have included Oru Naalil or Pul Pesum songs from Pudhupettai. You only told that that was the most innovative album in recent times. Why didn’t you include those songs?

Kamaraj:
Under-rated? Good idea…let me find time for it!

Jemsheed:
Sudum Nilavu shares Azhagaana Raatchasiye’s raaga (Reetigowlai) and it has already been handled incredibly in older songs like Thalayai kuniyum thaamaraye or Chinna kannan azhaikkiraan. The fact that even interludes sound sorta similar is due to the raaga’s pattern…I do however agree that Vidyasagar could have avoided some similar instruments to avoid direct clash with the Mudhalvan song.

In Tere Bina, I completely dig Chinmayee’s voice….never knew she can sing in this range. But, after the initial euphoria I really do not think Rahman sounds great here.

Vidhya:
Yes, I was prepared for the question on Pudhupettai. Both this one and AIBI, by YSR, really impressed me as an overall album/ package, but when it comes to individual tracks, I really couldnt place them high in the top 10. Oru Naalil’s remix is a personal fave but it ended just beyond the top 10, at no. 11 :-)

Surprising that U didn’t have any Pudupettai songs in your list. I remember you writing 200 words for the movie album than your conventional 100 words.

I like this list, but there’s no way New York Nagaram isn’t one of the top ten Tamil songs of 2006 in my opinion.

karthik, Sudum Nilavu is a fantastic choice for 1st. Infact, I think it has been under-rated by TFM fans this year. Vidyasagar has done a great job and I dont think the Azhagana RAtchasi comparison is fair.
BTW, there were quite a few Reethigowlais this year including Joshua’s Aran ditty Pooncholai Kiliye.
My favourite was the Bhavadharini surprise Mugilinamae - was that Sujatha. Dulcet is a mild word for that one.s

I have a special weakness for some raagas like Reetigowlai, Simmendramadhyamam, Charukesi and Hamsadhwani! Lemme listen to this Mugiliname. Is that from Amirdham, btw? Any place online to listen to this one?

Again, as I had mentioned in the Hindi Top 10 comments, a more keenly awaited list is the Next 10 - 11 to 20 best songs of 2006!! Kanja Penna was in that list, btw, just beyond the top 10.

Karthik, try onlinetamilmp3.com for Mugilinamae. I cant remember the exact link…it is worth the search.
Reethigowlai is a favourite here, too..Chinna Kannan, Thalayai Kuniyum, Azhagana Ratchasiye, and the 3 this year. Not to forget Meettadha Oru Veenai from Poonthottam. I am yet to find a light song in this scale that I dont love!

I like your choices very much and agree with almost all of them. Have you got a list for 2007 so far? I am sure you will include at least one song from Mozhi in that, right?
