Maayakkannaadi (Tamil - Ilayaraja)

Kaadhal indru & Kaasu kaiyil’s lively, but slightly outdated orchestration camouflages the complete disillusionment for love and money quite effectively thanks to Raja’s tried and tested vocals for such pop-philosophical verses! Konjam konjam is a perfectly capable melody but those extra bells ‘n whistles in the orchestration (Karthikraja?) is jarring! Yeale enga is a time warp nightmare complete with an 80s style chikkujaan prelude. Oru maayalogam & Ulagilae azhagi showcase the Raja we love through his recent Telugu soundtracks - vintage orchestration with simple, melodic refrains! One more enjoyable soundtrack from Raja for his fans in the 30+ age category!

Keywords: Cheran, Navya Nair, Maayakkannadi, Mayakkannadi

30+…not really..here is a 20 year old enjoying his trademark styles…its good to see him back in full flow although the sounds used during some parts of the vocals are abit
off-key. :D

Good to hear that! That 30+ remark was just another way to say that his music carries that strong deja-vu feeling…echoing only mildly his peak output period!

Yeah that deja-vu effect :( atleast his orchestration and arrangements are original even if the tunes are too glaring :D perhaps he does need a very strong movie to make him come up with something new

Chandrasehar - Naan Kadavul could be the one, the strong movie for IR to come up with something not new but classic…let us wait and see

I think karthik - If we search for the answer why we get frustrated when IR album doesn’t excite us will explain the expectations we have and our approach to music is more like a cricket match than hearing music;)

Ilayaraja , as usual - recycling his old tunes with minor modifications , nothing new - overall an average album .
Ulagilae azhagi is my personal fav.

The last good soundtrack from Raja was Bharati

Chandra - Mumbai Express was a average album .

So was Pithamagan ,Oru Naal Oru Kanavu , Virumandi , Julie ganapathy , Kaasi etc .

Bharati was class , something which is expected from a composer like Raaja

Raaja is my all time fav music director

Mayyakannadi is a decent album with 2 good tracks & others OK. By IR’S standards its just ok but compared to today’s standards its much better than the trash given by music dirs like Srikanth Deva (50% of the blame is on the dirs who give such situations).

I’m happy with the album. for first few times it may sound normal. after 5th time the listener will feel good about the tracks. Ultimately, beware you will get addicted.
