Himesh and the love/hate dichotomy

Quite a few people have mailed me with extreme annoyance and complete disbelief – ‘Why are you a member in both Himesh fans and Hate-Himesh groups at Orkut?’ Are we supposed to take a stand and join groups accordingly? I’m there in both groups only to understand how and why both sets of people react. I like some of Himesh’s soundtracks, but also hate many others. The question is not liking/ hating Himesh - it’s liking/ hating particular tracks of Himesh. For some very strange reason, many people mix both up beyond reason and end up being the quintessential Himesh fanatic!

I myself used to wonder at the same thing… I had actually thought that profile to be fake after seeing you in both communities.

While I agree that most of the members on Himesh’s hate club never show appreciation towards his good work, I am equally amazed when I see some of his fans rating some of his high-pitched songs as the best songs sung by him and citing them to be better than Tere Naam, Humraaz, etc..

But, Karthik, what do you feel regarding Himesh’s work this year? Last year you appreciated Aksar and Ahista Ahista, this year you’ve appreciated RED, Fool N Final and Apne i.e. more albums than last year. Though there has been no Jhalak Dikhlaja or Ashiq Banaya Apne, this year none of his songs(barring Dard-e-dil from GBBB perhaps) has been monotonous and one-hook dependant. He worked with Javed Akhtar in NL, but the Sameer’s lyrics in some albums like Apne have been pretty standard. And though he still sings most of the songs himself, he gave chance to Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, RDB, Harshdeep Kaur, Hanif Sheikh. Once again he worked with Sonu in Apne and Sunidhi was brilliant in Tanhaiyaan. All his albums released between Tere Naam and Aitraaz were flops but his Namastey London and Aap Kaa Surroor have set the music stands on fire.

I agree with you Karthik. I don’t utterly dislike Himesh, neither do I blindly follow him. I loved Aksar, Aashiq Banaya Aapne..recently his work has not been upto his own mark. In fact Himesh has always been hit with masses, be it those Salman Khan starrers or recent ones. I really loved his songs from Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge, Hello Brother and those..

So..let it be the quality of songs, in stead of your love or hate for the person. Save your Hatred for Anu Malik, who blatantly copies and still makes bad tunes.. :P

HR is definately talented, prolific and original ( Till Karthik finds some inspirations). I think Namastey London was an excellent album. I did not care too much for Red. His tunes are always catchy even if the

Himesh is a very love-him-or-hate-him composer. It’s very rare you’ll hear a unique and balanced perspective on him. People that don’t like Himesh will hate him, even when he’s really good. His fans, on the other hand, will find enough to like in any Himesh album and like even albums like GBBB.

As for why people think you hate Himesh, I think it’s simply because you didn’t like Namaste London. It’s one of his most popular albums and, in my opinion, one of his best recent works, especialy since it’s so balanced in what it has to offer. Oh, and not liking Aap Ka Surroor (the movie) as well when it had some decent offerings (Kya Jeena, Tere Bina)

He’s becoming more inconsistent than he was before - I used to be able to pick up any Himesh album and find a song that was instantly catchy, if only for its familiarity. I can’t find that on every album these days, but the quality of albums like Namastey London, Apne, and Aap Ka Surroor exceed stuff like Rocky and Anthony Kaun Hai?

As for Himesh’s music, it is still good quality. It is his singing that needs improvement. I have started immensely liking AKS songs. Himesh scores full points as a composer but he needs to do something about his vocals. I have noticed one more thing that those who are HR fans are those who knew him before ABA or those who are heartbroken.

As for Karthik being in both the communities, last year I too was a part of both as I hated his singing. Then, the mods banned me from the community and since then, I am bent upon bogus-ing all those hate communities

And Himesh-wise, couldn’t agree more! I guess the hate-Himesh element in me also has something to with the anti-pop-culture attitude. For the same reason I would hate Eminem or Britney Spears.
Not that their music (or they) are bad at all, but I just don’t picture myself throwing kisses to Britney at a concert or headbanging at a Himesh concert.
Secondly, Himesh for sure needs a different (if not innovative) lyricist.
Wow! Just had a conscience awakening. Seriously Rishi, I need to do something better with my life.

This is my first comment and I’ve really wanted to ask Karthik this question, so here goes!

Karthik, you’ve mentioned that there are a few tracks of Himesh which you prefer. That’s absolutely fine and even I believe some of Himesh’s tracks are great and some are absolute crap! But, my question is:
Which three Himesh songs, in your opinion, would you rate as your best?

Interesting question! My top 3 Himesh choice would be,

1. Ahista Ahista - Ahista Ahista
2. Zara zara - Run
3. Ooh la la re - Tarzan, the wonder car

Actually the third ties up with some of the better, catchy tracks of Himesh he used to compose before he changed tracks suddenly. There’s Zameen’s ‘Tere sang’ and ‘Dilli ki sardi’ and some of the lesser successful films he did that has decent music.

dear music lovers

i come from a place where most of the guys are rock fans, but i find it unbearable. similarly they find my choice ‘inferior’. but i can’t care to mind them. simply put, music is very personal

when i do not like a song it is becoz it sounds similar to other sobgs ive heard.. if it doesnt 2 sum1 else, they’ll enjoy the song. there is no good music as such… and wider your exposure to different music, lesser is your appreciation of the ‘mediocre’… but that cannot does not bcum a reason for, say ,me to hate the song..

and for the record i am a true fan of himesh .. not the fanatics you find on orkut
