Having finally endured this recent toast of the multiplex generation, I’m not entirely sure who I’m supposed to be laughing at. The audience is idiot number one, for, what we have been passed in the name of a film has a script/ screenplay lifted 98% from its uncredited source, Francis Veber’s Le Dîner de cons (The dinner game). Idiot number two is richer today, thanks to the first mentioned idiot. But, the joke will be on you, one day, Mr Ballary. Mr. Veber…please sue to hell out of this man and prove that there is justice in this world. Please!

You haven’t really told how you liked the movie. A word regarding that would have helped

I’m sure it would have! The movie was very good, with Vinay Pathak in his elements.

But I left out any of this intentionally - I don’t think the film makers deserve even a word of praise, for what they’ve done. Sagar Ballary goes ballistic if the intereviewer points out the Dinner Game connection by saying that he’s not like 3rd rate DVD directors - but he’s perhaps worse, since he doesn’t even have the sense to accept the fact even when pointed out directly.

I really like Ranvir Shorey. Of course Ballary does not deserve the accolades. My only regret is that he hails from Karnataka

Strangely Ranvir was totally off his usual self and seemed to be merely aping the French actor who played his role!

I think i read somewhere in passionforcinema that the producer had bought the rights for the film

Ameya: Please do let me know if you find the online source where you read such a piece! I’d be really pleased to hear that and take back every single rant on Mr Ballary, since thats the way to go!

I have the CD of the film and couldn’t find any credit to the source in it, either during the opening or closing credits. It was confirmed by Rajiv Masand too, in his review of the film in CNN IBN.

Ok, finally found the PFC link where Anurag Kashyap is the one saying that producer Sunil Doshi has bought the rights - its rather strange then that no one associated with the film is saying that. If they had, I’m sure Sagar Ballary would be seen in much much better light.

Check out comment no. 15.

Here’s another interview with Sagar, where he uses the word, ‘majorly inspired’ for the Dinner Game association.

The problem is that Sanjay Gupta sees Old Boy and freemakes it as Zinda. Mohit Suri watches the Korean film, A bittersweet life and freemakes it as Awarapan.

So, why is Sagar Ballary is being elevated to the level of a master for freemaking Bheja Fry? Just because he chose an interesting French movie? C’mon…thats ridiculous. Plagiarism, by any other name/ reason, is still very much that. Sagar should hang his head in shame that his debut is a 95% lifted freemake and that ‘he’ is being praised for a Frenchman’s original thought.
