Sivi (Tamil, Dharan)

The ambient, new-age sounds and Haricharan’s vocals in Mayavi neeya are breathtaking, just like the simple but absorbing tune Dharan cooks up. Oh nenje’s mild hip-hop mix is equally entertaining. Dharan’s penchant for the intermittent vocal harmonies reminds me of Harris Jeyaraj, but their usage is nevertheless sweet. Harris’ influence is evident even in the catchy Neruppum, complete with gibberish passages (Arabic?) and energetic percussions. Given the instant appeal of Sivi’s music (and Dharan’s debut, Paarijaatham), its a mystery why he’s associated with this possibly B-grade venture and is not lapped up for better productions in Tamil!

Its so exasperating when I find talented music dirs like Dharan, Vijay Antony, Ramesh Vinayakam & even Bharadwaj not getting enough chances with prominent movies. Second rung guys like Srikanth Deva give music for every other movie. I also find too many movies with Yuvan who I feel is losing his touch at least in Tamil (a case of overwork may be).I pray that the situation changes for the betterment of Tamil music & Indian music in general.

Dharan worked under Harris for a few movies, maybe thats why you find a touch of HJ in him.But he has his own style and I think this soundtrack sounds fresher than Bheema.

  • Arun: There's also Bombay and Kolkata as part of the series. Definitely, a commendable effort by Saregama!
  • shriramece: "Thajam thajam" is outstanding! A blend of many raagas, I feel.... I can find traces of Reetigowlai, then Bhageshri & later Sriranjani! Wow... a g
  • Satissh: Karthik, I think this guy's albums don't deserve a review from you. There has never been a decent effort from him ever! Cheers! Satissh
