Saawariya (Hindi - Monty Sharma & Sanjay Leela Bhansali)

The exuberant title song showcases a lilting tune and a fab new voice, Shail Hada. With an alternating rhythm, Jab se too is striking, while Kunal’s Masha-allah is enchanting and my fave! SLB surprises us with an ethereal tune and characteristically Badr’ish lyrics in Thode badmash even as debutant Parthiv Gohil sounds fabulous in the imaginative pre-and-post-chaand Yoon shabnami. Right about here, the soundtrack gets dreary, echoing a Subash-Ghai-lets-his-composer-loose sound. And, after 5 more blasé, overindulgent tracks, the soundtrack nosedives into one damp experience! After that exciting start, that’s mighty weird!

Keywords: Sonam Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Kapoor and Kapoor

Monty Sharma had given music for a movie
called MITTI…He is a very senior person
around 40 i guess…he has been working
in the music industry since more than a
decade. Considering his experience he
should have done an excellent job…but
the music of saawariya is a big disappointment.

Karthik - am with you except I would put even “thode badmash” in the also-ran category - so 4 out of 10 for me with yoon shabnami just making it in. The reprise version of title track is my fav though Shaan and Kunal’s exemplary singing in jab se and masha-allah make those two tracks extremely enjoyable as well.

What was the need of other 6 average/below average tracks — last I heard not all of these are going to picturised anyway?

Yay! Karthik’s back!

I really like the Qawwali interlude in Yoon Shabnami - the “Dekho Chaand Aaya” part.

Tiyaa: The only Mitti I know is an album by Sandeep Chowta, one of his best!

Arun: When I SLB’s name as composer, I had assumed this is going to be another self-indulgent nonsense, but the tune did surprise me - simple and neat!

Rishi: Yup, that qawali infusion for the arrival of chaand is very well handled!

Tiyaa, you’re right. But I suppose he composed only one track in Mitti while Sajid Wajid and Ali Ghani did the other tracks, as Monty himself says, in this interview. His every other project seems to be about making background scores.

For the curious ones, the track Monty scored in Mitti is titled, ‘Na jaane kya jadoo kiya’ and is a track that Monty himself may not want to remember now.

Listen to that track here!

Suresh (ursmusically): Actually, as I have mentioned in my review, I adore the first 5 tracks. Its just that SLB and MS indulge themselves above their craft and assume that we’ll accept everything thrown at us…literally taking us for granted and taking them for granted as the purveyors of everything classy and artistic. Thats the only part I’ve a problem with.

Else, the first 5 tracks are worth everything in the OST. But, IMO, Ismail Darbar did a more complete soundtrack for HDDCS…hmmm…that was something else! One explosive debut!

Don’t forget “Haan Maine Chukar Dekha Hai” from Black - it was actually quite an exceptional number, which is perhaps why expectations were so high for Saawariya.

HDDCS will always be my favorite bansali movie and soundtrack. I have given saawariya time to sink in and to listen to the finer details of the music.i can now say this is my favorite album for the year.it is also most certainly a far better effort than v-s effort in oso which is very ordinary for their standards. However what did irritate me was Monty’s comment about the movie having a different sound compared to bhansalis previous movies. Very untrue as you can all hear. Overall its a gr8 effort

  • Arun: There's also Bombay and Kolkata as part of the series. Definitely, a commendable effort by Saregama!
  • shriramece: "Thajam thajam" is outstanding! A blend of many raagas, I feel.... I can find traces of Reetigowlai, then Bhageshri & later Sriranjani! Wow... a g
  • Satissh: Karthik, I think this guy's albums don't deserve a review from you. There has never been a decent effort from him ever! Cheers! Satissh
