Pirivom Sandhippom (Tamil - Vidyasagar)

Kandaen kandaen and Medhuva medhuva are trademarked, Karthikraja styled numbers, exotic tunes, instantly alluring and eminently listenable. Soll soll and its Sadhana Sargam version, Kandum kaanaamal have a middling tune at best, but made terrific by the packaging, Vidyasagar working up some nifty orchestration. Iru vizhiyo is breezy and very pleasant - lovely chorus with a strong Rahman touch, while Nenjathile is an idyllic melody with a mild and thoroughly likeable rhythm. Shorn of any kind of commercial compulsions, even lesser than the Director’s earlier ventures, Pirivom Sandhippom dishes out a completely melody-soaked, dulcet experience in true Karu Pazhaniappan-Vidyasagar tradition!

The duo’s previous outing (sathurangam)did’nt manage a release so far- but had excellent melodies.Let me check this out. ( The only original CD i got last year was that of Mozhi)
Somehow i feel, more than KR and YSr , VS is the true heir to IR kind of melodies!

PS : Did you see Evano Oruvan? I read your Dombivili Fast review - Felt the same - but somehow Madhavan’s star image does pull the movie a ‘bit’ on the negative side - but on the whole it was excellent . ( This is like documentary version of shankar’s movies)

Agree on the IR heir part - VS has been proving his melodies in Malayalam for a long time and it was just a matter before he took it into Tamil - and he has done it really well with select Directors. And, he has become choosy on his projects too, which is a good sign.

Haven’t seen EO yet - considering I came to know about DF only after reading the news on Maddy’s remake, need to see this one too.

Glad to know that Vidhyasagar has delivered it again for Karu. Vidhyasagar started with an amazing soundtrack for Mozhi this year and it seems he also ends it well with this soundtrack. I am yet to listen to the songs.

Karthik ,

Melody-soaked yes , but none of them are really different from what we generally categorise as melody . To use your own words these are assembly line melodies or stock tunes . Somehow I don’t seem to agree with you reviews nowadays .

Listen to the songs of a movie called as Kaalai Pani (new movie), this is a good one

Also one song of Vaarnam Aayiram is available on the net - 4.15 minutes - not a small clipping . I am not posting the link here , since you dont wont links to be posted in your blog . Again a good one by Harris Jeyraj , but usual HJ stuff .

I considered that assembly-line argument as I listened to the songs the first time, but I found them unique enough. Kandaen and Medhuva really sounded like KR’s melodies - something about the raaga used I suppose. Nenjathile was an amazing Raja imitation, complete with similar synth - sounded good btw. Iru vizhiyo was way too Rahman’ish, particularly the orchestration. Kandum kaanaamal and Soll soll was the only weak link, IMO, and VS cleverly improvises the tunes with lively backgrounds.

Also, we dont necessarily need to agree on our musical opinions - better that way, since it paves way for constructive arguments!

DIVINE…no words to describe more than this…though the album has shades of many music directors….as u all have said:”Kanden” typically of KR style(to be specific its set in “vasantha” raaga and even Rahman had used it in “Minsara Kanna”..got the thread??)…”Nenjathile” of typical IR style(much similar to the recent “Cheeni Kum” style)..But the pick of the lot is “Soll Soll” and its female version..Balram’s is equivalent to the old P.B.Srinivas genre…I find much of Harris style in “Iru Vizhiyo”..Medhuva Medhuva is also very good…

  • raveessant: The humming tune in "Mastam" by A R R infringes Return to innocence even though it can be argued that it is an inspiration...
