Adada dada is duly catchy with a hilarious prelude by the lead comedians invoking Om Puri’s face! Kaadhal sei is an interesting experiment – mod arrangements for what is essentially an MGR-styled track - the composer’s vocals are bang-on too! Kurai ondrum’s filmi tweak is actually blasphemy, but the sheer beauty of the tune carries it through. Thendralukku nee is trademark Vidyasagar melody - delightfully tuneful and superb orchestration, while Aavaaram poovukkum, despite that oft-used dandiya rhythm and a very familiar folk tune, makes for lovely hearing, with those Ilayaraja-styled, adorable interludes. Vidyasagar dishes out a gratifyingly varied 5 track set!

Mere buddy and Hum to hain aandhi are kiddishly rhythmic, but do precious little other than that for my adult state. Banku bhaiya uses that catch phrase way too often and is exasperating. The mellow ones - the doleful Samay ka pahiya, with Hariharan and the hopeful Chalo jaane de, with Amitabh and Juhi’s vocals (!) reek of Shantanu Moitra’s musical style, but are competent and listenable. Vishal Shekhar fall into the very same trap in Bhoothnath, as Salim Sulaiman did in Chain kuli – how does one compose for a children’s film? For starters, take a cue from Ilayaraja’s Anjali!

Mr White Mr Black (Hindi, Assorted artists)

Shamir Tandon’s Tu makke di roti is assembly line nonsense - except for the idea of using brothers Daler and Mika along with Asha. Tauseef’s three compositions - Teetar, Namasteji and Behna ki shaadi are even more painful. Mercifully, old-timers Jatin Lalit’s (composed when things were hunky-dory huh?) Samandar is tolerably zingy. The duo’s other track, Ek dil ki makes us nostalgic of a period when they were ruling the roost, even though it sounds a bit dated now. Mr White Mr Black’s soundtrack is clearly outdated with a saving grace in the form of an ex-composer duo’s two tracks!
