Ada (Hindi, A R Rahman)

Ishq ada’s free-flowing sufi-tinged music has a trance like charm while Hawa sun’s gentle melody is reminiscent of Rahman’s Taal score. Gumsum sounds like a standard Bollywood product, with minor Rahman’ish twists and Gulfisha, despite the stylish orchestration, just passes muster. The composer croons the best track of the album, the dulcet, Meherbaan. Chitra’s Tu mera hai is very South Indian’ish in its tune and lyrics use, even though the track gets into a ghazal-like structure later on. The melancholy in Hai dard and Milo wahan seems forced and dated. Rahman’s music in Ada is strictly average and minimally involving.

I’ve been desperately waiting for this album. And Meherbaan rocks.Amazing rendering by Rahman! And yeah, the rest of them are just okay, probably a rahmaniac would expect much more from a 10-track album !

Ada is not that bad for me. Infact I liked it more than Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na.

A.R.R Sir’s music in Ada isn’t strictly average. I disagree with this. Ada is a good album. Nevertheless it’s obviously freedom to give your thoughts…

Seriously? to me this and Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na are his best works since Meenaxi! I hate his patriotic/period albums so much, so finally we get a REAL album from him.

I only dislike Ishq Ada songs and Gulfisha doesn’t cut for me, but the rest of the song have grown on me and I love them!

Ishq Ada - both versions make nice experience.

Meherbaan - very good, although I could not pick up lot of Urdu words.

Gumsum - why, why, why!!

Hava Sun - Alright.

Hai Dard - something Ismail Darbar could have created for a period movie like Devdas. Not that it would be bad, but not Rahman’ish.

Gulfisha - left-over from the soundtrack of Jeans.

Milo Wahan - I cannot believe this is Rahamn’s song. Specially with Alka Yagnik’s vocals..

Tu Mera Hai - does sound South Indian song but it’s good. I like Tamil songs although I don’t understand it at all. :)
To sum it all, I think the album does deserve to be in 2001 or whenever the movie was conceived. ARR has definitely evolved as a music director and the place where he has reached right now, it is little awkward to hear old sound, though I could pick up any old Rahman classic and listen to it. The music/orchestration is terrific, and draws heavy influence from Rahman’s international projects. But some stale tunes, stale vocals [read Alka Yagnik] and 2-3 evergreen terrible songs take away lot more than they can give.

[Save me because I am probably going to be banned from Orkut's ARR Fan Club now. If that happens that's second music director in two weeks. :D]

10 tracks.. Except Meherbaan, rest are quite disappointing. I wasn’t sure if it was just me having this feeling.. but after reading your review I know that I am not alone..

..a real dud from ARR after the classic Jodhaa Akbar..

Those golden days in 90’s, all ARR songs in a movie used to be a super hit which was exceptional. only ARR could do that. But now dont think ARR is having time to compose. ARR trademark is missing here. He might think of cutting down international assignments to concentrate here.
burn some tracks from ada and JTN to cd and then listen.

another noticeable feature is ARR has cut down instrumentation in both these albums and more vocal.

@Abr: Haha..yes, so true. I don’t think I will be listening to this album even for the ’standard time period’ that a lot of Rahman albums take to grow on you. I am afraid Rahman himself won’t remember this one for very long.

A couple of tracks are good but on the whole am disappointed with the soundtrack. ARR was perhaps trying to go massy with this one, but he has overdone a few things and I didn’t enjoy it much. Maybe I would have liked the soundtrack more had it been released 8-10 years ago, or maybe sad songs just aren’t ARR’s forte!

On a bright note, good that ARR hasn’t relied too much on synthesizer, it has given the album a different touch compared to his other works.

Though right now JTYJN is my pick, I feel ada is a fantastic album! Not being a hardcore Rahmaniac here, but as a music lover… Noteworthy is the use of strings in the sow songs in this album! Mujhe tum milo is brilliant. To all those dismissing the songs as “normal”, I suggest you give them time to grow…

I agree almost completely to what you wrote about each song but not necessarily with the last 2 lines.

I liked Meherbaan & Gulfisha, later one for Sunidhi’s vocals(I wonder y Rahman doesn’t work with her more often).

Yup its true, it does take a while for Rahman’s songs to get on someone. But even after listening many times (thats y this delayed comment)just the above mentioned two tracks appeal me. Ada is a bit too free flowing for me…too much liberty in arrangements & vocals completely ruins it. Rest all the songs give heard before kinda feeling.

Does the stringed instrument in Gumsum remind anyone else of the string part in Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast from the film Mohra?

ada is a cool album . initially it was a no no for me but now its like pretty good

ishq ada hain : now that’s a stylish song from rahman . u can really feel the thrust of his style . in it . The female version is awesome .

hawa sun hawa : its a slow song and will often be painful in normal mood . but try hearing in the serenity of night . wow i guess i simple love this song

meherbaan : divine . i reserve this song for my girl friend ..no comments !

milo wahan : ok song . it slow , i dont dont like alka yagnik much these days so i may give it is a miss , however the male chorus in it towards the last makes me hear it atleast once a day

tu mere hai : chitra does it well . fairly nice song .

hai dard : i hated dat song but now i like it. it is also kinda average

gumsum : one of my favorite song now. i always wondered y on earth arr gav dis crap but i love it now

gulfisha : i still maintain the same “i dont like it”

aada is ruling the charts after jaane tu … promotion of ada is awful , horrible . but the music has clicked and it is selling well . good work by rahman .. however i feel he knew that the movie has all chance to bomb in the market so he gave a mixed bag . half great song half average but none worst

7/10 + 1 for female ishq ada !

ADA The Musical is a total disappointment to me… I’ve heard albums having the TITLE “MUSICAL” which actually have everything in it to prove…But this one by Rahman starting from the first track has “ZERO” in it.. Songs ain’t amusing, though he has made use of great singers..
I am being critical about this because Rahman is the most talked about Music director n much is expected from him.. Yet again he fails to deliver…
