Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na (Hindi, A R Rahman)

Rahman’s lessons on existentialism in the jazzy title song is only marginally interesting, while Runa Rizvi and Sukhwinder’s two version Jaane tu mera is beautiful - with excellent variations and heart-rending lyrics. The teasy Nazrein milana and the longing Kahin to hogi are neat musical attempts - the former, young and fresh and the latter, a ballad’ish, soft melody. The soundtrack however belongs to Rashid Ali’s Kabhi kabhi and the groovy, rockin’ Pappu cant dance! Abbas Tyrewala’s directorial debut has Rahman giving him youthful and trendy numbers, even though the overall package is entertainingly diverse from a standard Rahman product!

Karthik, thanks for the great and superfast review of JTYJN !

Pappu can’t dance (also the remix version) really rocks ! And Khabi khabi is very cute.. the album is absolutely great ! Wonder why ARR doesn’t compose more music like this, instead of off-beat ones he has been for a long time in hindi.

Rapchik guitar work in Nazrein Milana. Jaane Tu mera is haunting, Evanescenceque song but the sound of female version is terribly similar to something I have heard so many times!!!

And the title song is a good take on ‘Let’s call the whole thing off’.

The most recent version of this song was by Louis Armstrong and Ela Fitzgerald in When Harry Met Sally.

The soundtrack rocks big time! Its interesting to find that the time period for most of the songs is in 3 - 4 mins range. That is quite unusual esp. in a rahman’s track as lotta his songs goes on for over 5 - 6 mins. Perhaps it was intended to be short and sweet!

Kabhi Kabhi sounds similar to Appudo Ippudo from Bommarillu the telugu flick, from which JNTYJN is being remade..

‘even though the overall package is entertainingly diverse from a standard Rahman product!’

^^
Affirmative!!

@ idongivadamn : JTYJN is NOT a remake of Bomarillu. The remake is coming for sure, but with Harman and Genelia in the lead; produced by Boney Kapoor.

idongivadamn,

actually, the khabi khabi first few words are similar to the interlude before the second para of Mustafa mustafa (kadhal desam). Apparently, the bommarillu song is also similar to that :)

oh god…i came back here to say exactly what srini just said.

and I also felt that the line “Jaana Dil Jaana” in Jaane Tu Meri Kya Hai very similar to the line “Mulayam Mulayam Si Neeli Neeli Raat Hai” in Ahista Ahista from Swades.

Kabhi Kabhi sounds like an extension of Kadhaaa Sadugudu / Aye Udi Udi (esp.haste haste bit) but catchy nevertheless..

ARR’s jazz experiment should have stopped with SOK.. The title song would have been much better without the jazz elements

Kahin to hogi seems to be a mix of several English songs (boy bands stuff)

However, much better fare than Ada..

Lovely soundtrack! This is the kind of soundtrack that I had been waiting from Rehman for years. It kind of reminds me of his work in movies like Boys, which makes the soundtrack special.

Kabhi Kabhi and Pappu Got Dance got on my nerve in the first hearing itself. First Jodha Akbar and now JTYJN, ARR seems to have realised that nowadays people want songs that should get on with the first hearing itself, not of the kind that you have to hear again and again so that they will “grow” on you.

I haven’t heard too many of his recent Tamil soundtracks, but never missed any of his hindi soundtracks. So after listening to his last few hindi soundtracks, I feel he is in fun mode after a long time. Very diverse album with some real peppy bollywoodish tracks. I enjoyed this one, thoroughly.

Whoa whats with the anti-jazz campaign!! :P
Personally i’d rate Tu Bole the best track in the album! Wonderful tribute to Louis Armstrong!!

Yeah..but I think both he and I meant the similarity in the intro music only. To be honest, I was hooked up to the song from that music only, before the ‘doom metallic’ vocals took over!

Well.. I’m not Anti-Rahmanic… I speak from my heart.. I criticize the worst compositions from any music composer… n also praise the best. I found his compositions to be very ordinary n i said so taking into account his past works n reasons for which he’s praised.
