The soundtrack’s two most satisfying songs – the trademark Raja melody Kaalathai vendra and the hauntingly ambient Kallaai irundhen – are completely out of sync with the film’s medieval period. Between the classically-bent Abhinayam and Kallil uyir, the former sounds straight out of a teleseries while the latter is a considerably enjoyable medley of raagas. Agandhayil is conventional but with interesting passages recited by the composer, while Chozha valanaadu is too predictable with standard Raja fixtures including a mesmerizingly nostalgic first interlude! Azhagi varra is plain coarse potboiler material. Snatches of Raja’s sounds of yore makes this soundtrack unexpectedly listenable!

What do you actually mean by unexpectedly listenable?

Meaning, ‘I least expected anything listenable but actually found something good’. Sometime setting very low expectations becomes very useful.
The ‘least expected’ part is a culmination of the kind of music found in the recent past films penned by Mu Karunanidhi and Raja’s recent soundtracks in general.

Abhinayam starts differently. But as it progresses, it strongly reminds me of “Azhagu malar aada” song of Vaidhegi Kaathirundhal. What do you say Karthik?

I loved almost all the songs except the fast one! After a long time a decent album from IR in tamil! The classical sound & original percussion instruments (means lesser synth!) bring in a fresh sound to it!
