Aaja milke’s tune is haunting and even that seemingly standard rhythm builds up quite impressively. Shail and Shreya Ghosal are in fabulous form crooning this one. The techno-pathos in Bin daseyaa [...]

Enna pulla opens the soundtrack with honest, pathos-laden vocals by Vidyasagar, while Tippu does the same in Vanathai vittu, amidst innovative backgrounds and absorbing interludes. Ippave’s routine orchestration and rhythm actually camouflages a lovely, longing tune and Karthik’s inspiring vocals, like its lyrics, are impressive in the interestingly tuned Nanba. DJ DJ doesn’t fit the [...]

Karthik rules over the catchy and very in-sync Ilamai kanavugal, while Unakkulle irukkiren’s sedate, vintage melody is alluring. Bhavatharini’s Kannanukku is a passable semi-classical with occasional display of Raja’s past prowess. Koothu onnu is tantalizingly seductive though bordering on the crude, but the title song is plain routine. Raja’s own vocals mark the meaningfully written [...]

In one of his 90s interviews in India Today (if I remember right!), Anu Malik gloated that people will definitely love his music in Main khiladi tu anari. This was post his super successful Baazigar, who’s songs were playing almost everywhere those days. I did like the songs of Baazigar and was quite intrigued by [...]

Who wouldn’t mind getting recruited by Angelina Jolie? That too, when she’s named Fox! But, James McAvoy does, for filmy reasons. Mark Millar’s fraternity of assassins yarn, in its loosely-inspired movie avatar by Russian director Timur Bekmambetov aims to be a frenetic action feature but is only intermittently interesting. The eye-popping, bullet-bending action set pieces [...]
With a childishly simple tune and silly lyrics it’s easy to dismiss Strawberry kenne, but composer Mano Murthy packs it with easy-on-the-ears arrangements while Rajesh and Supriya impress with their renditions. The Sonu-Jayanth-Mano combination works again in Maathinalli helalarenu, again with a mild, Latin melody – Shreya Ghoshal’s version too is very listenable, with different [...]

KK’s Aksar is all Pritam. The structure, the choice of KK, the ‘O Oh oo’ humming… everything. But, to be fair to the debutant composer pair, the track has an enthusiastic and lively ring to it - pretty enjoyable. So is the unplugged version by Shaan. Dekh dekh too sticks to the Pritam formula - [...]

The title song is unintentionally funny too - because it dares to be the title song and gets Sanjay Dutt to utter a few sentences. But composer Anand Raj Anand does considerably better in his other contribution - Speaker baje - an enthusiastic, groovy techno-punju number. Bappa Lahiri, enthused by the attention from Sanjay Gupta’s [...]

The title song is beyond mere blasphemy, since it ventures into completely incoherent cacophony, dragging with it a memorable line that we Indians hold dear! Anu shows flashes of his yesteryear sound in Marmari baahein, but the updated tune and strained vocals by Kunal Ganjawala and Mahalakshmi Iyer do no good, while the quasi qawali-ghazal, [...]

The two moody, thematic pieces - Jairam jairam and the theme music - are just marginally involving. Mickey’s vocals in the pop-induced, 80s style Nasha is considerably better. The proceedings get interesting with the milder tracks - the rhythmic Ya kudha zara opening the session impressively with Harish and Kalyani’s vocals. Sariga padani, in Karthik’s [...]
