Maa vooremo’s unruly vocals by Malathi are appropriately raucous, while Manisharma recycles his own boisterous Tamil Pokiri title song in Eelesi nuvvu. The title song’s ennui boredom in the tune and backgrounds is considerably reduced due to lively vocals of the trio, Ranjith, Rahul Nambiyar and Naveen. Where the composer really scores in Yuvatha is [...]

The Karunesh-styled Lut jaaon, the rhythmic Hari Om and the ghazal-like Dhoom tere ishq ki are the only tracks that warrant just a single listen! The wounds from Himesh’s earlier barrage are still fresh and he’s back doing what he does worst – same hooks, groans, aahs and oohs. Add to that, Ek hasina thi [...]

Soham’s Bhuvanam is interesting – neat word play by Nagendra Prasad, used well by RP Patnaik. Jothe jotheyali is painfully routine – standard rhythm and bland singing. Sonu Nigam sounds terrible in the mundane pathos number Yenaytho idho – one muddled mess. Amalu is even worse – almost like a composition from a child. Embarrassing! [...]

Ammane opens by lifting Diana Haddad’s megahit, Amaneh, but singer Vinitha and the lyricist load the song with extraordinarily vulgar stuff, complete with suggestive moans. Chinna maamiye, sung by Vijay’s mother Shobha, is built like Baila tune, but with disgustingly regressive words! Kaadhal theeviravaadhi is simplistic and bland while Lusimbara is a garbled medley. In [...]

Aub Delane’s Get away day is non-descript while in Unnai ethirpaarthaen, Kumaran’s poor vocals mar an otherwise interesting tune. Kalyana kaaviyam is reasonably better – simple and frothy melody, delivered well by Prasanna and Rita. Sandhana maram has some awkward lyrics that just doesn’t gel with the tune, even though Srinivas’ vocals stand out. Latha [...]

Priyan sounds flat and completely unimpressive in Kodi kodi minnalgal – even Vijay Antony’s tune, barring the use of bagpipes is terribly dull. Nachulo nachulo (really, I’m not joking!) is barely listenable – singer Annamalai sleeps through the annoyingly stale tune while the title song goes several steps further in being unimaginative. Naan unnai paartha, [...]
Beyond the listener-friendly ballads in Ek baar, Aankhien and Janay kahan, the zingy teen rebel stance in Khul ke pyar and the delightfully lilting folk-fusion in the Mai Bhagi tribute, Baro chal, Shehzad arrives in the rousing, meaningful Laga reh and in the guitar-meets-sufi duet with Abida Parveen, Zindagi. Even Quaid-e-azam works – a bold [...]
Ramchand Pakistani is perhaps one of those rare soundtracks that epitomizes the now-forgotten link between India and Pakistan. The best song that brings forward this bond is the revival of the Bangla folk classic, Allah megh de, with Shubha Mudgal and Shafqat Amanat Ali’s vocals – this is a soulful and compelling rendition of an [...]
