Music review: Karzzzz (Hindi, Himesh Reshammiya)

Posted by: Karthik In: Hindi OST

The Karunesh-styled Lut jaaon, the rhythmic Hari Om and the ghazal-like Dhoom tere ishq ki are the only tracks that warrant just a single listen! The wounds from Himesh’s earlier barrage are still fresh and he’s back doing what he does worst – same hooks, groans, aahs and oohs. Add to that, Ek hasina thi is mauled with ridiculous backgrounds, but with a ray of surprise in the composer’s clear vocals for a few fleeting seconds in the beginning! The extra zzzz’s in the film’s title may sound funny but they truly denote the soporific nature of this worn-out soundtrack!

Keywords: Karz, Karzz, Karzzz, karzzzz, Karzzzzz, Karzzzzzz, Karzzzzzzz, Zzzzzzz, Himesh Reshammiya, Urmila Matondkar, Shweta Kumar, Dino Morea

i dont remember exactly wch 1 as i was almost in 90 % sleep

  • roshanastrologer
i just got a mail that "bol na halke halke" is a rip of from tarkan's simarik

    just listen to it
and lemme know wil u rate it a even an inspiration

i think the basic guitar portion of the song ROCK ON IS TOO A LIFT FROM LAKSHYA BACKGROUNG GUITAR IN END

wel the music director is same for both the movies
bt it gives an impression tht how clumsy effort it is to reuse ur own tune
  • roshanastrologer
    for kaarthikkkkkkkkkk

ar rehman copying a smalllllll portion of tune in jane tu

in starting of "nazre milana nazre churana"

the small portion is exactly similar to "bum bum bole"

    KARTHIKKKKKKKKKK
    I NEED A REPLY FROM U
u mentioned ye ishq hai a copy of sm "forein language number"

thanks i realy like that song (forein 1)
bt that actualy seems to come from "roop suhana lagta hai" (ar rehmaan)

there's 1 song from DR. DRE( i hope m using the rite name)
find it for all of us
    it came in 2005
it uses a complete mid basic tune of the song from aradhna (sd burman) (baagon main bahaar hai)

i think u shd start working on reverse plag.

Another perfect example ... make it two ! and possibly an entry for itwofs website.

Punjabi folk sung by Reshma titled 'Akhian nu rehen de'.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-H1W-sNiyw

Lyrics AND music (ditto) were used by Laxmikant Pyarlal in the chartbuster movie 'bobby' and one my all time songs.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTkrvKgwL1w

Another example is punjabi / rajhistani folk song sung by Reshma 'way mein chori chori'

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWM8tKYRPbg

Same composition was used in the movie 'lekin' by Hridayanath Mangeshkar in the song 'yara silli silli'

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eC92n0wXs8k

Karthik, these might good addition for itwofs, if not already posted and if you think this infact is plagiarism and is worth mentioning.

    Cheers,
    Jamshid.

There is a difference between sadaa churiyan da chanba lyrics and composition. Poetry is punjabi folk and is in public domain, just like bulleh shah's sufiyana kalam/poetry. The tune, however, is artist's own invention.
The same tappa is sung by Gurdaas maan, Tufail Niazi, Reshma, Arif Lohar and Mussarrat Nazir. All of them sung the tappa in their own composition.

    Gurdaas man
    http://desifly.com/portal/music/tracks/30975/

    Tufail Niazi
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQDokFw9i78

    Reshma
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJgf6WTDEGo

    Mussarat Nazir
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8s9vxwG_-A

Now Himesh Reshammiya used Mussarrat Nazir's composition in his song 'chher de pyar ki baat' which should be termed plagiarism.

    Himesh's song (listen from 1:16)

    What do you guys think?

    Jamshid.

Sick music by Himesh Reshamiyya!!!! The worst ever music composer!
  • yaju
I am not defending HR, I am criticizing the system, which says that it is perfectly ok if you copy folk songs. Unfortunately we don't have anyone who mentions on the CD cover about the folk songs they adopted.

S-E-L created their work in Mission Kashmir based on several folk songs. Many times ARR creates music based on traditional songs. Did they credit the original roots on the CD sleeve? No. Several of our legendary MD's apadted folk songs. Did they acknowledge? No.

Even if someone starts mentioning on the CD that he has adopted a folk song, most likely the other composers won't catch up and his market image will be tarnished, as people will start thinking that this composer isn't good as he copies songs which others don't do.

The ideal solution for this can be that the top 4-5 composers have an agreement and start mentioning openly that they adopted folk songs. It will act as a trendsetter not only for MD's but for all those who believe in creativity.
  • Karthik
I don't agree. Its like, for instance, taking a phrase or its meaning out of say Gita or Quran and passing it as your own. The world may know that those sentences/ implied meaning is not yours, but your duty as a creator of that piece is to acknowledge the source. Not having a source (composer's name) has never been a problem - he can simply say, tune: traditional folk.

Himesh has spoken a lot about his moral values and I believe that he would have done this - not sure what stopped him.
  • yaju
Vyasma has a point. When I heard "Saada chidiya da chamba ve" in Chedh De Pyaar Di Baat, I wasn't shocked at all. The song is immensly popular and several other artists have used it as well.

When Pritam used Ude Jab Jab Zulfein Teri in Its Rocking, nothing was said about it and he passed the composition as his own as well. Recently Bombay Rockers and Meet Brothers used Baari Barsi Khatan Gaya Si and didn't credit the original creators as well.

Anyway, we'll have to wait for HR's response to this. Calcutta Times interviewed him before on this, let's see if they ask him again.
  • Jaydeep
    Tejas
Its a permanent on my playlist. I almost felt offended when I heard Anand Raj Anand's track.
  • tejas
@Jaydeep - what the fork!! Solitude is my most favorite Karunesh track, even better than Punjab. Why..why someone has to rape such nice song!!!
  • vyasma
Too much hoopla on Punjabi song by Kally and lift by HR...It is a punjabi traditional song used in many places..music videos..movies..dont think its created by Kally..its very old traditional song just like...sada chidiyan da chamba(used again by HR in AKS-music album)...cant say this a lift..
  • jamshidmahmood
    hHi Karthik,

Another version of the same punjabi tappa can be found in the movie 'monsoon wedding'.

Jelena Karleusa, the serbian model/singer who copied Himesh's song 'Aashiq banaya aapne' as well as sampled the alap of Javed Bashir from the song 'Tere jiya hor disda' has got a song named 'saki' in her album 'JK Revolutions'.

Turns out the hook of Jelena's 'saki' is actually copy of the hook of (guess what!) 'saki' song from the movie musafir sung by Sukhwinder singh.

She at least credited 'mala mala' to A.R. Rahman but there is no mention of either Himesh or movie musafir.

    Jelena's Saki (wait till 0:45)

    Saki from musafir (from 1:24)

    Way to go Jelena!
  • jamshidmahmood
    To Karthik and all members,

The 'lut jaaoon' of Himesh has got the melody of a punjabi folk song, also known as punjabi 'tappa'. Karunesh's 'punjabi' actually has the melody AND the lyrics 'haye ve mere daadheya rabba ....'. I dont know is the singer in karunesh's song (although the voice resembles Naheed Akhtar's voice).

What I do know is that 'haye ve mere daadheya rabba' was first sung by madam Noor Jehan in the movie 'dhee rani' released 1985.

    Movie's details:
    http://mazhar.dk/film/history/80s/1985.htm

    Noor Jehan's rendition:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLxmoSLZpu4

Another rendition by Mussarrat Nazir of the same tappa is:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5nK2rJytHo

Mussarrat Nazir's song is more closer in melody to the Karunesh song, albeit the differences in tempo.

Can we call it copying, even if its a folk song. I dont know!

May be Wajahat Atre the music director of the movie came up with the initial melody.

The fact is, same melody was used in a movie song and a tappa and Himesh used it without reference to any of the originals. Is that fair?
  • Jaydeep
Yup, worn out sound is the exact short n sweet description of this long n boring album. It was great when he innovated and gave us Aashiq banaya aapne and Aksar but its sad that he turned that sound into his image. It will be very difficult for him to come out of it and I am sure some of us are already ready to plug our ears each time his tracks plays. Lut jaaon and tandoori nights (if one thinks of food n doesn't open his eyes to watch horrible looking urmila..hehe) are tolerable. Ek haseena thi orchestration doesn't create that impact of flashback it should. Rest all is been there heard that kinda Himmesh stuff.
    Kartik,
It might be out of context here, but while all are talking about karunesh, this clicked me. Anand Raj Anand copied (i don't know with or without credit) karunesh's Solitude to create teriyaan mohabataan for Sarhad Paar. Check out this links

@yaju- it was already known that Kally's version is by t-series..but thats not the case..we arent talking abt legal law suit here...its about using someone's song without even giving credit on the covers..t-series holds thousands of songs by hundreds of artists, but it doesnt mean they can use any of those songs in new film without even awknowledging.. Moreover the Kally's version is also not original which is by t-series, original was sung by Hussain Baksh,a pakistani singer, which was not with t-series for sure.
  • Karthik
Yes, its a different thing that T-series has the rights. It boils down to whether Himesh wants to be seen as someone who has lifted a folk tune for his own benefit - like Ismail Darbar did in HDDCS' Nimbuda.
  • yaju
  • yaju
    Karthik,

The rights of the original song by Kulwinder Kally are with T-Series itself.

    Check this :: http://www.punjab2000.com/acatalog/Punjab2000_H... .

In the middle of the page, you will see the DVD listing for Bhangra Pa Laiyye. See there :: (19) Sohniye Je Tere Naal(Kulwinder Kally) .

You can observe on the album pic that T-Series has released the DVD, which means that they own the music rights of the song. As they credited just the music label for Sa Re Ga Ma HMV for Ek Haseena Thi, maybe that's the reason they didn't credit the artist themselves.

The best person to answer this would be Himesh himself.
  • gangster
@karthik- U wrote ''you can hear some background alaap in Himesh's vocals too'' in that post of urs abt Jelena's lift of Himesh song..the vocals are of Jawad Bashir as righly said by TEMUR.
  • gangster
@iiit.naveed- Check 2nd and 4th comment abt karunesh's ''aao huzoor''.
  • temur
    @iiit.naveed: eagle-eyed!

the background alaap in Jelena Karleuša's 'Ko Ti To Baje' are Jawad Bashir's vocals from Rishi Rich's 'Nahi Tere Jeha Hor Disda'
  • iiit.naveed
I heard the title track of himesh's karzz and was actually surprized by the astounding resemblance to the the remix version of " Aao Huzoor".
The harshdeep track in the title track of karzz is a direct lift from Punjabi words in aao huzoor.

    http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=1T7gEahfgX4

just listen to the punjabi track in aa o huzoor
and the female track in karzz title.

    it seems a lift.
i dont know weither credit has been given or not.
  • bhavuk
    karthik

    thanks alot :)
  • Karthik
Just updated the whole thing - ABA and Maiya...a second back, in ItwoFS...check it out :-) Was working on it all this while!
  • gangster
@Bhavuk- the person who copies without permission wont give damn whether its rahman or himesh...his intention will b to copy a tune only. rahman's songs were awknowledged on wiki coz that singer took permission from rahman personally as stated. The same serbian singer has also lifted rahman's Maiya Maiya from Guru which is also not credited anywhere. karthik please do look into this matter as this serbian singer has now lifted 2 songs from bollywood...although its nothing as compared to wat bollywood musician's have lifted. The link is -

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TALGiqL800o

and its a remix version, the original version too as Maiya Maiya tune.
  • bhavuk
    karthik
ok alright but how will i come to know about any further development in this matter? i want to know whether she has given credits to himesh or not or are u going to update it as a lift on your site?
  • Karthik
bhavuk: I understand, but I actually get about 75+ such mails everyday....rather difficult to respond to all/ most of them! If something has a genuine case, you'd anyway see it in ItwoFS!
  • bhavuk
    *accepted =expected
  • bhavuk
    karthik

ok but dude i accepted a reply for my 3-4 mails .
  • bhavuk
the credits for songs inspired from ar rahman have been given in wikipedia but not in case of himesh.
  • Karthik
bhavuk: Check the 7th comment above!
  • bhavuk
    @karthik

i have emailed you about that sebian lift several times now and u havent even repliedto anyone of them why this partiality with himesh reshammiya dude?
that song has even used the sargam in starting which is taken from the remx version of aashiq banaya aapne .
please do look into this matter also.
  • gangster
I agree with Karthik that you cant blame any serbian or any artist untill you check whether credits has been given or not on CD covers. Yaju,if you are so much worried about this..why dont you arrange the CD cover? There are many songs of Rahman which has been used by Arab/other artists, but they have been given due credits.
  • gangster
Lifting few of traditional/folk song wont really violate copyright as there is no owner, but atleast a credit should be given. People who dont know that this song already existed are going gaga over this composition of himesh thinking its his own...i didnt expected this from himesh and t-series.
  • Karthik
Will definitely add that Serbian lift after I make *sure* that Himesh has not been given a credit. I'm sourcing the album CD cover for this purpose - I can't go by assorted YouTube videos or just 'several mails'.

Let Kally's song be a folk song - he deserves a credit, since the Karzzzz soundtrack makes it look like it is Himesh's original composition. That's grossly unfair on Kally or the original folk song.
  • Arun
Yaju: Which song of HR? Can you provide a link? I'm curious!
  • yaju
    Karthik,

When a serbian singer lifts his song, you make no mention about it on itwofs, despite getting emails from several people. In past you have added info about so many indian composers whose songs were lifted, but when someone lifts a song by HR you don't add info about it.

Anyway, the song by Kulwinder Kally is a traditional Punjabi song, quite a few singers in the past have sung it.
  • Karthik
gangster: Excellent find. Himesh is usually original and makes sure he is - wonder how he allowed this. There's no credit for this song anywhere for anyone else! Will add this in ItwoFS later today, with a credit to you.

As for the Karunesh part, even Karunesh uses loops so, this may not be a case of lift.
  • ravihno
"Karz, Karzz, Karzzz, karzzzz, Karzzzzz, Karzzzzzz, Karzzzzzzz, Zzzzzzz "

    Lol..
  • gangster
karthik, i was pretty sure u will notice the karunesh touch in title track, dont you think its probably a lift, the arrangements are completely same.

Second copy/inspiration- the song 'Soniye Je tere' completely lift from same titled song by punjabi singer Kulwinder Kally..with similar lyrics, the CD doesnt carry any credit to it. Karthik please look into it,waiting to see your response. and as far as i know the previous Kulwinder Kally version is the cover version which was by Hussain Baksh . Link to Kulwinder Kally's version is here-
