Music review: Vaaranam Aayiram (Tamil – Harris Jeyaraj)
Posted by: Karthik In: Tamil OST
Sudha Raghunathan replaces steady favorite, Bombay Jayashree in Anal mele – a soft, heavenly track who’s tune and focused vocals create a fabulously ambient concoction. The mild backgrounds reminiscent of old Telugu numbers, is incredible. The George Michael-Faith inspired Mundhinam and Nenjukkul are breezy – brings that spring in our feet as we sing along, engrossed in the tunes. Oh Shanti, Nenjukkul’s faster, rockier variant too is engaging! The rock base of Adiye kolludhey, with excellent vocals by Krish, Benny and Shruthi is aptly catchy while the Rai-styled Yethi yethi is rousing and addictive. The most interesting track is however, Ava enna, with a disparate, apologetically mild kuthu base which shifts to a somber mood mid way, after a brief operatic struggle! Vaaranam Aayiram’s soundtrack is a fantastic example of a set of mesmerizing tunes used with the right vocals and appropriate backgrounds, making a solid impact. Harris Jeyaraj springs a complete surprise – surprising because Harris’ few recent ventures were painfully monotonous and unsurprising because it is a Gowtham Menon film. But make no mistake – this soundtrack incorporates every trick we’ve come to love Harris for; but the composer uses them in the best way for maximum appeal!

This time am pretty sure. Delayed review
But excellent review indeed. Worth the wait
Betw,
Not even one single line about Thamarai
Extraordinary lyrics in Mundhinam and Nenjukkul. Wow… Kudos to Thamarai.
Yes, Harris once again proves that he strikes the right chord in choosing the singers.
Great job by Harris. Can i call it the best album of the year (atleast so far) ?

Delayed but good review …… couldn’t resist this line however — “this soundtrack incorporates every trick we’ve come to love Harris for; but the composer uses them in the best way for maximum appeal! “

Thamarai fills that void left by Vairamuthu in Tamil Cinema

Glowing Review! The credit must go to Gowtham for making HJ work very hard in this album. btw, what tricks? Are you mentioning abt his rehashing & re-engineering abilities on std. rhythms and making it sound fresh?

Tricks? The melodic hooks that are so unique and typical of HJ – the ones that even kids can go, ‘aah, HJ?’! But, he seems to have used them smartly this time!

Any idea about the 2 other songs (Ragasiyam endru & Meela mudiyamal) that were available (along with Adiyae Kolludhae) online since about May-June. They arent part of the OST?

The tracks which were available online earlier aren’t even from Vaaranam Aayiram, somehow this rumour has been spread by even Musicindiaonline who have these tracks on their site.
Ragasiyam is a beautiful song composed by the wonderful ppl at TSJ studios. You can visit their site here : http://blog.tsjstudio.com/
You can also listen to their other songs, equally amazing.
I’m not sure who composed Meela Mudiyamal, it is slightly amateur, but sounded a bit promising. If anybody finds out, do reply to this thread.

Thank you ckannan90! Makes sense…yes Meela mudiyamal did sound a bit unpolished and I had already started giving HJ negative points for that! Makes sense!
Ragasiyam is pretty good and I did think HJ did a fantastic job there…well kudos to the TSJ guys! Great song!

Good review..
HJ is at his best.. The thing I like about his music is that it is always smooth flowing.. no hiccups, no peaks and valleys.. easy on the ears. I can often play all his songs in a shuffle mode without having a to skip a single song.. I can’t say the samething about other composers.. Keep it going Harris..

“ava enna” song definitely sounds lik a pathos gana song… the lyrics seems to be so…. its only because of sudha ragunathan, “anal mele” song stands out….rest of the songs r usual harris stuff…(i dint lik adiye kolluthe’s finishing though)

Very good album indeed but
* I am getting bored while listening some songs including Adiye Kolluthey
* Munthinam and Adiye kolluthey are heavily inspired or quite copied songs
* Listening some songs sounds like mixing non-continous musical/song bits

Adiye Kolludey is heavily inspired from “Yendrendrum Punnagai” from Alaipayuthey…particularly the rock-like first stanza ..wondering how you missed the so obvious “inspiration”.
Mumdhinam’s guitars are copied from George Micahel’s “Faith”
HJ continues to re-engineer and re hash his old tunes tricks but still he manages to get a good review !! If ARR uses even a small instrument bit in his songs again, there would be a furore in the blogosphere and reviewers about how ARR has become repetitive !

ARR is almost absent from Tamil Cinema ..and when he does come he recycles his tunes from Hindi ..
Great MD and potential is obvious , but he is not very keen to do Tamil films and that shows in his output . … very medicore by his own standards .
ARR lost Vairamuthu and Harris has Thamarai and that makes a huge difference ..
Blaze cannot be a replacement for Vairamuthu ?. . .

We really can’t blame Rahman for not concentrating in the south bcos there is a lot of admiration and hope in the bollywood.. Also there is a lot of scope to get subjects more adaptable to his type of music..Yes I am sure Harris has succesfully filled the absence of Rahman in south…

Karthik, do you ever contemplate reviewing ‘dubbed’ albums?
In this case, Surya s/o Krishnan, the telugu version of Vaaranam Aayiram.. Shruti Hassan should have sung the Telugu ‘Adiye kolludhey’

The Telugu version of ‘Adiyae Kolluthey’, ‘Yedhane Koiyyake’, is not sung by Shruthi Hassan, but by Bhargavi Pillai!

I know! That’s precisely what I was complaining about! I said Shruti ‘should have’ sung it
