Music review: Dostana (Hindi - Vishal Shekhar)

Dostana is one of those mixed bag soundtracks that has Vishal and Shekhar sticking to their familiar, tried and tested sounds. So, while we have a bouncy Jaany kyun with fab vocals by Vishal, we also have a terribly cringe-worthy Desi girl! Saleem’s Ma da laadla is good fun with catchy hooks, while Shut up and bounce, with its pop’ish retro backgrounds is fairly lively. The duo close the soundtrack with two of the album’s highlights - the imaginatively tuneful Khabar nahi and the soulful, Shaan-sung Kuch kum. Dostana’s soundtrack is a good listen, but nothing really to rave about.

Karthik, I am really loving Jaane Kyun & Khabar Nahi . They are really additive with a fresh sound in Vishal’s voice. Ma da laadla is a fun song. I think V-S are on a roll starting with Tashan , De Taali , BAH and now Dostana.
One important point is they are totally original like SEL. It is very very difficult to create original tunes.

karthik, I have been following ur reviews and I must say they are very well written. The only complaint that I have is u give credit to music directors and singers, but not to the lyricists. In my opinion good lyrics increase the longevity of a song. Don’t you think so? and please mention about the lyrics if u find them good……just my 2 cents advice…..thanks for ur wonderful reviews…….

So far I’ve caught only Jaane Kyun, and though it is a very catchy tune, every time it reminds me of “I’ll be there for you” (Friends theme song). But I’m not able to pin point exactly where is the similarity…

Maybe the ‘I’ll be alright’ hook or the beats in the background… Dunno… Anybody got the same hunch? :/

A good one yet again from Vishal-Shekhar. These guys are really creative and prolific at the same time. Agree with Pman like SEL, VS are very original. They have created their own style.

Jaane kyun and Khaber nahi are my favs from this one.

Narendra: I agree, I do not focus much on the lyrics - but make it a point to add a note if I find them really good.

Hello! Doesn’t the song “Shut up” sound a faster version of “Put my feet back on the ground” by Mr. President with Cocojambo? During the chorus.
