Music review: Chaandan Mein (Indipop – Kailasa)

Posted by: Karthik In: Non-film

Kailasa’s Chaandan Mein is perfectly in sync with what is expected from the band. The title song shines with Paresh’s guitar and a sweet tune sung with his usual passion, by Kailash. Na batati tu, in an interesting twist, has a playful tune with lively sitar phrases, courtesy Sunil Das, while Teri yaad mein’s simplicity is also its biggest strength – Kailash’s earthy words work very well in the otherwise conventional tune. With a mildly Indian Ocean’ish turn, Bheeg gaya mera mann (Cherrapunjee) is the album’s highlight – the joyous tune symbolizing rain and the arrangements that complement the feeling are scintillating – the band soars to beautiful highs with the jazz tinged additions later down the track. Ishq ho gaya’s woebegone outlook sticks out annoyingly while Sunil’s sitar resurfaces along with more folk’ish sounds in the blithe Rang rang ma. Piya ghar aavenge lays out its beauty gradually, with alternating santoor and flute pieces teasing Kailash to soar with his vocals. Kar kar main haara has more of the striking sitar even as the singer expresses the hopelessness in his lovelorn deeds evocatively. Kailasa does it again – getting it right the third time in Indipop is no mean task!

His international album Yatra is a better value than Chandan Mein, imo. The album is mixture of all his three albums plus two new songs (Guru Ghantal and Turiya) plus acoustic version of Tere Deewani and Joban Chaakle.

Those two new songs and those two acoustic songs are so brilliant.

    Check the album out.

These guys are original & that alone is a big attribute in itself. To top that they are really good & have managed to create a very unique style of music.

Mesmerizing Indian melodies, soulful folkish lyrics & innovative arrangements make for a great listen.

For me this one works big time and loved the cover design too. Great job guys, keep it up.

This is really sweet album. Kudos to Kailasa for paving new ways of experimentation without giving away old times' goodness..

Kailasa's music is different. We're bound to feel it bizarre at first...it happened all three times with me.

I gave Chaandan Mein a 1st listen and i'm pretty happy with the result for a 3rd album by a band that has to keep tunes for Bollywood movies as well.

    Off to a 2nd listening...

i was disappointed when I first heard the album in the morning. I found the album lacking the appeal - it is a very restrain album. Still it is better than what is out in the store. My favorite songs are Kar Kar Mein, Na Batati Tu & Rang Rang Ma. Those both songs have Kailasa trademark written over it...!! I so don't like Bheega song cos it is so Bollywoodish! Maybe after a couple of hearing I won't mind that....

Anyway, I do like the album; I just wanted more... I want a Kailasa song which is fully sung in a Hindustani Classical raag (with sargam, alaap, tehaks, whatever) in a rock composition. He hasn't done that yet!
