Music review: Love Aaj Kal (Hindi – Pritam)

Posted by: Karthik In: Hindi OST

Overlaying a familiar, repetitive sapera-been piece to a hyper-energetic tune in Twist is a total winner all the way; Neeraj Shridhar rocks in the catchiest track of the year, so far! Chor bazari too works with its foot tapping and spunky arrangements, but to a lesser extent, since the tune isn’t as interesting. Main kya hoon’s funky orchestration saves a largely passable, free flowing tune; KK’s vocals generously help in turning this track around. Aahun aahun ups the ante significantly – another spirited tune with Pritam in super form arranging it; right from the guitar prelude, to the addictive and imaginative sounds the composer produces…this is yet another highlight in this soundtrack. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s Ajj din chadheya is lilting and lovely…a breezy melody that gains tremendously with his serene vocals. The folk’ish shaadi number, Thoda thoda pyar takes a huge leaf out of the Chopra style of filmi music, but the authenticity in the music and lyrics work in its favor. Yeh dooriyan has Mohit Chauhan doing his thing, as usual; but even as the gentle melody breezes past, the tune isn’t really sticky. But overall, Love Aaj Kal’s soundtrack has everything one expects – take a bow, Pritam!

as a music critic etc you should mention/know that the title track of Love AAjkal is an exact replica in terms of lyrics/tune of a punjabi song sung by the late pakistani singer Noor Jehan.if Pritam was so inspired by the song he should have at least given her credit for it,that is my only gripe.just thought people should know.
  • milliblog
Well, what you mean by title track - I do not recall a song based on the film's title. Pritam had credited sources for 3 songs in this soundtrack's CD.

For 'Twist', the credit was, "Courtesy Saregama India Ltd.for the instrumental hook of the song Twist from Mandole - Nagin, composed by Hemant Kumar"

For 'Aahun aahun', the credit was, "Kadi te hass bol ve - lyrics and melody traditional"

For 'Ajj din chadeya', the credit was, "Ajj din chadeya tere rang verga - original line by Shiv Kumar Batalvi"

    karthik,

I am a follower of your reviews . However i would like to disagree here. Are you saying that this soundtrack is in the same league as Delhi 6 while Dev D is not ?

I listened to this one over the weekend. Its a super entertainer.
All the tracks are pretty good but full marks to Pritam for the following three:
Aahun aahun for its rhythm and arrangements, Twist for being so bollywood with a twist & Aaj din chadeya for its composition.
  • Karthik
Nope...such marginal similarities should ideally be given the benefit of doubt.
  • Sunny Gupta
So Karthik. Is it comin on itwofs??
  • Karthik
    Marginal, I'd say :-)
  • Jaydeep
    Mohit,

I heard it a few times and I realize that was a hasty comment on my part. Just a minor similarity between the two was stuck in my head.

There is a similarity though, what do you think Karthik?
  • Jaydeep
    mohit,

I am not talking about the main song composition. I am talking about whistle like prelude & strings portion that plays as interlude and in the backgrounds. I found them pretty much same except Pritam ends it slightly differently in each of the two repetitions.

I'll give it a thorough listen again though.
  • mohit3
Jaydeep... Beethoven and Dooriyan?, i dont think its similar at all!
  • Jaydeep
This is such a coincidence. I write about giving credit to international sources and hour later happen to hear yeh dooriyan on a local radio station and I am surprised no one has mentioned it. The whistle like prelude & interlude strings portion, actually the melody that plays continuously in background is nothing but Beethoven's ODE TO JOY.
Now shouldn't Pritam or Eros mention that???
  • Jaydeep
    Karthik,
It indeed is really a welcome thing that the sources have been credited for this album. Rahman's Delhi-6 did it too. But for me its just a baby step as all these sources are Indian, I wonder will it be so easy when it comes to crediting international artists & music labels. It will be great when a music label or musician will set such an example. I know of only two such examples one is SEL's pretty woman for kal ho na ho and Shamir Tandon's world rock on track for Mission Istanbul where they had done it the right way.
Although, I am glad atleast a baby step has been taken, it still seems to be a long walk, before we really can call it a big day.

I LOOOOOVE THIS ALBUM!! My favorite song is Main Kya Hoon is my favorite, it's beautiful! The Pritam - KK duo is unbeatable!
  • arunm
It seems now anyone can do anything if they are ready to give the credits for the inspired/lifted songs.
See, karthik became a fan of Pritam [:)]

As the above commenter has stated, Pritam has given credit to the original musicians for the 'inspirations' in Twist and Aahun Aahun in the CD Booklet.
  • vjv
Pritam rox with this album....and all the talks abt lifts....etc...should stop...should stop as he has given credit...for all the inspirations in all the songs...like the Naagin song...he has given credit to the original composer....for the Khadi Naal part in Aahun Aahun...he has given credit to the original....makers...Traditional....the songs r not a copy...he has just used a piece of them...rest songs r original compositions of Pritam....Pritam has grown...and give him the due respect ppl...for me this album is the best of 2009.....maybe now until Blue releases....keep rocking Pritam....
  • mulye_ameya
decibel naagin is jus instrumental version of tan dole mera man dole...with guitar tapping technique
  • mulye_ameya
that tan dole mera man dole...theme is one of best bollywood tunes.....som othr r like karz theme
naagin tune is used by decible in different way
pritam has fitted a whole song on it
  • disectmuzzic
Hey guys dis aint any creativity from Pritam...dis song is inspired from the Naagin song by the delhi based band Decibel ( Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9dB73CBxV0)...its their idea...the only diff bein tat, those guys used xcelent guitar riffs...Pritam added lyrics tats it....if u thought this track is hooky, den check out the band's version..its bloody awesum.....
  • Nick88
Who allowed pritam to use dat "sapera been" tune in the song twist?
  • shrinivassg
Isn't twist lifted ? The starting tunes that is, from a tamil song, 'Cindrella Cindrella Oh Cindrella .. Nee thendrala thendrala .. veesum thendrala .. saghiye pogathe pogathe ' .. dont remember the movie though ..
  • vinayderock
Karthik, "Luck" Soundtrack is out and is by your fav Salim Sulaiman .. waiting for your review
  • Chisel
'kadi te hans bol ve' is a very popular song in the north....
    its one of my favs....
pritam uses the initial parts of it in aahun aahun...
i hope they took the rights coz using such a famous song without rights would be stupidity.....
  • Sunny Gupta
good find.. aks84.. the first part of the song is the same..but its nt near to the blatant lifts by pritam.. he has improved a lot.. thnx to karthik and itwofs.com.. pritam surely has improved
  • aks84
I think Ahun Ahun is inspired from Kadi tu hass bol ve.. from madan maddi's album...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcBmBTWN5cg

although the song is not entirely inspired.. but initial part of the song has similar tune and lyrics.

I don't have the CD of this album yet.. So, I don't know if they have bought the rights or not.....

Check it and let me know karthik what do u think...
  • ajitg
I think this is overall a very enjoyable track - both massy and yet has enough for the music connoisseur. However, I did not really think it deserved the 'Milliblog 200-word' review, for it's not in the league of others in this category.

Perhaps it was just the itch to write and we should ignore that the 200-word accolade on this one. All said and done though, Pritam shines through his orchestration and arrangements in this one, nice melodies barring a couple of average ones and this is definitely going into my playlist!
  • kanadc

  • Sunny Gupta
I personally like the Love Aaj Kal soundtrack.. Especially Twist, Main Kya hoon, Ye Dooriyan and Chor Bazari.. I feel its a very good album if not great like Metro. Take a bow Pritam from my side too.. like Karthik
  • msrikantt
This is probably the second time you are being generous with Pritam ie after Life In A Metro. That was a cracker and remains his best. This doesn't pale in any way though.Apart from the allegations,Pritam has been the most inventive and consistent MD for the past 2-3 years.
  • Nick88
Very boring album..expected alot frm dis album but album is not upto da mark..I m fed up of Neeraj same kind of singing..big disappoinment!!
  • Honhaar Goonda
Nah, didn't think it was a sympathy review. I think, even re-hased 'Let's Dance' soundtrack is better than this.... though!
  • Karthik
Ouch, that would make the 'sympathy' story stronger...need to update ItwoFS with the source for Aahun aahun soon :-)
  • Honhaar Goonda
i don't like the album. it is awful. i still stand by that Twist is a Gibberish song of the year. And Neeraj is so out of place in the song. why couldn't Imtiaz have gone back to Sandesh? His Socha Na Tha Soundtrack is 10 times better than this and Jab We Met. Anyway, never was a big fan of his stuff and wasn't looking forward to the soundtrack, so not surprised.
  • Chisel
    wowwwwwwwww......
i was waiting for such an album from pritam for long....
he shows his tremendous skills of music designing in all the songs, the kk track specially....
    3.5/5
but yes i m also getting bored of neeraj's voice now..... someone please remind pritam that sonu nigam is also there.....
  • Karthik
Sympathy? At Milliblog? Not in your dreams ;-)
  • Sriram
Just heard the album! Sounds above average with THREE very good songs!

I like 'Twist', esp for the starting piece of music, which is from 'Tan dole mera man dole', Lata ji song.

Then, Aahun aahun, again for the Guitar strings. Chori Bazari sounds cool!

The rest are good! Pritam has to stop using the regular Bombay Viking - KK - Rahat, kinda bored of the same voices.

    3/5!
    Good Job Pritam
  • Sriram
I really hope its good and not sympathy driven for what has happened over the week!
  • sam9999
  • mohit3
    What an album...
    This is a cracker..!
