Music review: Mathiya Chennai (Tamil – Ilayaraja)

Posted by: Karthik In: Tamil OST

If any other composer did so many insignificant, commercially unsuccessful films in any language, his career would have died a natural death, by now. But Raja, prods on, thanks to his illustrious past. Tune-wise, the street-smart catchiness of Sullikuppam, naughty, almost rowdy’ish outlook of Ilavayasu and the ambient, harmonious melodies in Unnai patri and Un vaazhve are mighty good. The other two tracks are exasperating. The interludes, particularly in Ilavayasu and Unnai patri, reveal Raja’s form from eons ago. Decent enough soundtrack – but is Raja doing a favor by gracing his name to make these films mildly more saleable?

Karthik,

Heard that “appAvi” music by Joshua is out and has some good numbers. Check it out :)

I’m yet to listen to the songs.

  • Vijay: Yes, Kalagane haunts me to the core. Right put as 'gloomy melody'. Raja has cleverly handled the tune without going to higher octaves to avoid strain
