Music review: Paa (Hindi – Ilayaraja)

Posted by: Karthik In: Hindi OST

Mudhi mudhi (and Udhi udhi) is one of the trendiest songs of the year; zingy, superbly sung by Shilpa Rao and exceptionally orchestrated! Gumm summ, after its various versions – one in Hindi itself (Aur ek prem kahani’s Sunday ko), still sounds as lilting as the original, Olangal’s Thumbi vaa. Hichki is muddled, at best, while the intentionally-kiddish Mere paa is barely saved, by the theme interlude. Balki imports Halke se bole’s tune again, after using it in a Kissan Jam commercial – the chorus versions is disappointing, though. But, Paa’s soundtrack is worth the price for Mudhi mudhi alone!

Keywords: Ilayaraja, Putham pudhu kaalai, Thumbi vaa, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Balki

If Mudhi Mudhi is one of the trendiest song then that means Himesh’s Rafta song from Radio is trendy? Both are a two-beat (i think) song and similar length. Anyway, I do like Rafta (wish someone else had sung the song!), Mudhi Mudhi and Udi Udi.

Hi Karthik, I do not know how did you miss this similarity: interlude in ‘Mera Paa’ is already utilised by IR in Athu oru Kana Kaalam in the song ‘Kaatu Vazhi Kaal Nadaya’. Even most part of Mera Paa resembles the above song.

Karthik—Vidyasagar’s Neelathamara songs are out, very decent effort with one exquisite song, Pakalonnu, sung by Balram (of Kaatrin Mozhi fame), do check out!

Karthik, it seems that there are 7 versions including the recent ‘Gum Summ’ from Paa for the original ‘Thumbi Vaa’ from Olangal. Check out the following link:
http://www.musicquencher.com/blog/2009/08/25/multiple-versions-of-a-single-tune/

All are composed by IR and one can hear the significant variations in each. Almost 3 songs in Paa (Gum Summ, Halke Se Bole, Mere Paa) are re-orchestrated. Is it possible the remaining two songs (Hitchki, Mudhi and its versions) are also re-orchestrated? Hitchki reminds me of some tamil song sung by S. Janaki. However, it might be difficult to retrieve the same from previous IRs musical compositions.

@ All who think this is a great album

The Orchestration is good.. But its old.Mind you dont put me in the category of ppl who hate IR and maintain tht his work is bad.

No, I would always say IR is the best Tamilian Composer till date.
But its worth noting a few of the below points:

1.The Orchestraion is Great.No doubt.But its very mid 80′s and early 90′s.

2.Beats are overused.

3.Expected more from IR

4.Not right singers.Like partiality towards Ms.B[u know whom and why.It could have been sung better].

4.If this album had been given by a Bharadwaj or Imaan or any mediocore composer .. it would have been dismissed as NW1W or just mention of 1 song Mudhi Mudhi.

5.Doesnt go along with the current trend in Hindi Music which has to be kept in mind.[wouldnt matter in this film as it is an Art film which focuses on Emotions. This kind of music has been why IR hasnt suceeded in recent times with his attempts to recreate His Old Magic in Hindi(remember this ALbum called Chal Chalein recently.Perfect Example. Not with the trend. Do u want to hear TR r SA Rajkumar belt out their tunes now.It just wouldnt work wouldnt it??]

I am not comparing IR to these composers .
Its just to point out the Soft Corner u always have for IR. Agreed treat him like he is on a Pedastal but not when u are trying to Review his Art!!!!!!

If this album had been given by ARR , I think people would praise it like anything.. If someone says mudhi mudhi an average song..

I don’t think Karthik has any soft corner towards IR.I firmly believe that he is trying to be as close to unbiased which is evident from his reviews.

Only way Karthik could prove that he is ideal could be “Dismiss all IR albums as NW1W” without even hearing as someone wanted. Atleast it would save Karthik’s time and effort and it would bring joy to all those who find it hard to appreciate IR’s genius.

what you keep forgetting is these compositions are new as far as a average regular hindi film music buff is concerned …..and they are damn good …..so doesn’t matter even if he has used some of them earlier in Tamil

That’s fine Arun.
I wanted to ask u another question arun.
Including politicians from Kerala condemn Ilayaraja for his speech at the release function of Tamil P.Raja. I saw the video , in that raja praises MTVasudevan, Harharan and even ONV. He recommends to watch the original (Malayalam) version.

But people from Kerala blame raja. What do u think abt this matter?
