Music review: Suryakaanti (Kannada – Ilayaraja)

Posted by: Karthik In: Kannada OST

Chan chanare is embarassingly pedestrian – haven’t we heard these tunes already in the 90s more than adequately? Swalpa soundu too is in similar territory, barring the spunk in the arrangements that Raja smartly conjures up. But, Jaikara haakkona nails that 90s feeling beyond description – it is so incredibly dated! Edeya baagilu and Mauni naanu are vintage Raja material; they both are highly functional melodies, but unfortunately, vintage enough to evoke a severe sense of tedium too. For all the hype that the film’s makers and The Hindu’s S Shiva Kumar created around Suryakaanti’s soundtrack, it is a huge letdown.

Keywords: Chetan, Suryakanti, Suryakaanti, Ilayaraja

To the prick who runs this website

Embarassingly pedestrian – aint it a bit too harsh mate – especially coming from someone who hasnt any compositions to his name

I read milliblog quite often – you are one of those douchebags who think any chaotic instrumentation that suits your “Pot induced mood” is good music (ARR for e.g)

simple fact for you to ponder – when you speak you hear your voice – after 20+ years of that tedium – surely the music should be a good change –

B4 you start critiquing someone with such a track record, just look at urself in the mirror once, with a towel in hand (to wipe the mirror in case you spit on your woeful reflection)

Hi IRF,

I wonder why a connoisseur of music like yourself is bothered about a prick. Also, could you please not see this as a critique and more as a personal opinion. Just like you have the right to get away with calling me, a complete stranger, a prick, with no obvious, meaningful justification, I believe I have the right to call something pedestrian.

Also, when you are going to call people names, it is slightly more manly….or decent, to do it on your own name. Using a 3 letter acronym and no contact details makes you a larger ***** than what you allege I am.

Prick – ” A person regarded as highly unpleasant, especially a male”

you are that – considering you rate the song of an MD dear to me that way – I guess its personal opinion which guarantees me immunity against your comments.

Prick – is not a name – its an attribute

“it is slightly more manly….or decent, to do it on your own name” – why ??
Manly – male chauvinistic ; decent – i do not consider your review to be decent anyway – no reciprocity applies

“haven’t we heard these tunes already in the 90s more than adequately?” – havent you tasted you mother's cooking more than adequately these past years???

“Jaikara haakkona nails that 90s feeling beyond description – it is so incredibly dated” – why exactly is dated something undesirable????

Pray do answer my queries – I apologetically withdraw my previous comments

Food is something we do for sustenance. I'm glad you consider music that important, but, for practical purposes, it is an outlet of entertainment. So, things do get boring if they are repetitive.

Dated is not necessarily undesirable. It needs to be seen within context. As a Tamilian soaked in Raja's music, I may be over exposed to his style, but you may not be – I do not know. There are times when even his dated music has given me immense pleasure, like Azhagarmalai, for instance, which I adored.

On an average, I'm tired of Raja's style. If you are not, it is best you add that opinion by articulating it well as a comment to my point of view, so people do not go with just my perspective, but also get to read a counterpoint and make up their minds. Unfortunately I cannot write my own counterpoint :-)

IRF!nnBeing an ilaiyaraaja fan myself, I feel your comments are way too unreasonable and insinuating, because you seem to be lacking the minimum decency and decorum. You can criticize a review but you do not even know the line between criticism and personal attacks. I surmise, from your comments, you are just another psuedo fan(a real fan doesnt behave like this) who takes more pride in finding faults with other composers(particularly ARR) rather than appreciating your idol (sad that you idolize my idol, Ilaiyaraaja).nnHope some sense gets into your head, that this review is a personal take. It is just what works for this author, be it ilaiyaraaja or ARR or even Pritham. If you cannot digest it, better dont visit this blog. Nobody is paying you for visiting here right.nJust my 2 cents (as an IR fan myself, so you see, I am not biased, like you are)
