Milliblog Annual Music Round-up 2009

Posted by: Karthik In: Lists

Here it is, finally! There are still some interesting soundtracks expected (particularly in Tamil – like A R Rahman’s Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya and Yuvan Shankar Raja’s Goa), but it’d be unfair to wait for them and decide on them in such limited time given that we have just 2 weeks more in 2009! 2009, in my opinion, has been a stellar year for Hindi and Telugu music, an average year for Kannada and Malayalam music and a sad year for Tamil music. Also, I considered posting the lists as 5 separate posts, but the point of Milliblog has always been uniting music across languages – so, a single, master post! So, without much ado, here goes!

As always, the lists here are in order of preference…no random lists in Milliblog!

Hindi

Hindi film music, in my opinion, had a fantastic year. It was so good that I found really difficult to come up with a final top 10 songs list! So, breaking usual tradition, besides the top 10, I also have a 11-20 list that did not make it to my top 10. Another reason for this extension is that people tend to ask me the ones that did not make to the top 10, in the comments section. Besides, the 11-20 list adds justification to my choice of the Composer(s) of the year, since that is not a mere result of being in one of the top 3 soundtracks or being a composer(s) of one of the top 3 songs. My choice of composer(s) of the year is more from the point of consistency, all through the year. After Aamir in 2008. Amit Trivedi continues to impress in 2009, even if he had just one soundtrack and a solo song in another soundtrack. Vishal Bharadwaj was, as usual, in incredible form in Kaminey, but the man who stole the year was A R Rahman, with a soundtrack that elicited Milliblog’s first ever 300 word gushing review! But, Shankar Ehsaan Loy deserve the title of Composer(s) of the year due to the sheer range of impressive songs they composed – 5 out of the top 20, to be specific.

Composer(s) of the year: Shankar Ehsaan Loy

Tamil

Tamil film music was very, very average in 2009. I found it difficult, unlike Hindi, to even come up with a credible top 10. But, even in the Tamil list, I’ve added a 11-20 given that there are some songs that are little known and could sure do with some minimal extra popularity that Milliblog can bestow on them. James Vasanthan made definite, confident strides in 2009, after a chart-buster track in 2008, while Yuvan’s track record continued to remain dotted – but he shows tremendous promise in the kind of sound he creates. The most promising climb is that of young Thaman, who, after a series of Telugu soundtracks, finally makes his mark with just 2.5 songs in Shankar’s Eeram. The most shocking omission in the list is however, Harris Jeyaraj, who after being the composer of the year in 2008, fails to get even a single track in not just the top 10, but even in the 11-20 list. Hope he does better in 2010.

Composer(s) of the year: Yuvan Shankar Raja

20. Allah (Ninaithale Inikkum, Vijay Antony)

Telugu

As I had explained in my annual round-up in 2008, I do not listen to every single thing released in Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. So, the lists below may not be exhaustive enough – still, they’re an opinion and I sincerely hope you dig up some gem from them which you may have missed otherwise. As far as Telugu film music, Mickey J Meyer ruled the roost in 2009 – he topped it all with a super soundtrack in Leader. But, long before Leader happened, Yuvan, making a state-shift, delivered a mind-blowing soundtrack in Oy, which deservedly takes top spot. Devi Sri Prasad, in his usual style delivered many soundtracks, but he truly evolves in the nuanced composition, Attu nuvve, from Current.

Composer(s) of the year: Mickey J Meyer

Top 3 Telugu OSTs, 2009
1. Oy (Yuvan Shankar Raja)
2. Leader (Mickey J Meyer)

06. Danchave Remix (Ride, Hemachandra)

08. Kalavaramaye madilo (Kalavaramaye madilo, Sharreth Vasudevan)
09. Yenno yenno (Kavya’s Diary, Manu Ramesan)
10. Kadile padam (Banam, Manisharma)

Kannada

I’d easily say that it was Maestro Ilayaraja’s year in Kannada. He was extremely prolific in Kannada and delivered some genuinely good music. But, towards the end, Raghu Dixit swooped in and took the top honors with Just Maat Maathalli. You may find it odd that some of the more popular/ commercial hits from films like Love Guru or Raj The Showman are not in the list – well, when has Milliblog been about commercial success?

Composer(s) of the year: Ilayaraja

Top 3 Kannada OSTs, 2009
1. Just Maat Maathalli (Raghu Dixit)
2. Bhagyada Balegara (Ilayaraja)
3. Gokula (Mano Murthy)

01. Just Maat Maathalli (Just Maat Maathalli, Raghu Dixit)
02. Madhu magalu (Bhagyadha Balegaara, Ilayaraja)
03. Mauni naanu (Suryakaanti, Ilayaraja)
04. Haalada heartalli (Maleyali Jotheyali, Harikrishna)
05. Aaramaage iddenaanu (Gokula, Mano Murthy)
06. Hodadavne (Prem Kahani, Ilayaraja)
07. Nisapaa (Mukhaputa, Hamsalekha)
08. Alele savaari (Thaakath, Gurukiran)
09. Thanthane (Jhossh, Vardhan)
10. Koogi kuniyona (Venkata in Sankata, Ricky Kej)

Malayalam

I had promised in the 2008 round-up that I’ll include Malayalam, so here goes. But, it is a truncated lists and the best I could muster is a top 7! I really do not want to stretch the list (only 3 more, I know!), since that would amount to adding songs that did not actually make it to my personal playlist that often. I’ll try and do better next year! Ilayaraja, after Kannada, again features on top of the Malayalam heap, given how consistent he was in delivering good music – even if only 2 have featured in the lists below. Vidyasagar did a Raghu Dixit (in Kannada) and came in strongly with Nilathamara, towards the year end. But it was Deepak Dev who swooped in with splendidly massy music in the Prithviraj-starrer, Puthiya Mugham.

Composer(s) of the year: Ilayaraja

Top 3 Malayalam OSTs
1. Puthiya Mugham (Deepak Dev)
2. Nilathamara (Vidyasagar)
3. Bhagyadevatha (Ilayaraja)

Top Malayalam songs of 2009
01. Picha vecha (Puthiya Mugham, Deepak Dev)
02. Swapnangal kannezhuthiya (Bhagyadevatha, Ilayaraja)
03. Anuraaga (Nilathamara, Vidyasagar)
04. Venal kaattil (Ritu, Rahul Raj)
05. Kunnathe konnakyum (Pazhassi Raja, Ilayaraja)
06. Aaro nilaavayi (Ee Pattanathil Bootham, Shan Rehman)
07. Suryamugham (Puthiya Mugham, Deepak Dev)

Non-film

It was not that impressive an year for non-film music, but some of the pop artists did deliver decent stuff. Kailasa again gets top billing and after 2 really good albums, delivering a winner again is truly excellent. I opened up to Bangladeshi music big time this year and have made a note of them in the top 3 list for the subcontinent. On Western music, I really do not have the time to explore deeper, but have listed the 3 that I loved the most in 2009.

Indipop
01. Chaandan Mein (Kailasa)
02. Mahaleela (Sivamani)
03. Thaalam (Job Kurian, Charan & Yakzon)
04. Grounded in space (Advaita)
05. Fitoor (Mohit Chauhan)

The sub-continent
01. Huns Dhun (Saptak, Mekaal Hasan Band)
02. K-J Kar (3rd Person Singular Number, Prince Mahmud)
03. Amar Desh (Anan, Hashem, Zeeshan Zakaria, Sara Islam, Shithi)

International
01. Cradlesong (Rob Thomas)
02. 21st Century Breakdown (Green Day)
03. The Boy Who Knew Too Much (Mika)

So, there it is – my top of the tops in 2009. I had an incredible time with all these artists playing for me, in my iPod, my car, my mobile phone, my PC and my CD player. As I see, 2010 sounds really promising, with tons of interesting music lined up for release. I’m hoping it’d be another great year for Indian film music. Needless to add, any new soundtrack that releases in the rest of 2009, will be tagged along with the 2010 releases.

I may not be able to respond to every comment, but I’m committed to read every single comment posted in Milliblog. So, do let me know your feedback – it’d be fair to say that since every person’s taste is different, there would be tons of disagreements with my lists above. Do let me and Milliblog’s readers know of your top songs of 2009 – I may not change my opinion, but I’ll be richer with the awareness.

Surprised to not find Dil Gira Dafatan in top 20. It should ideally be in the top 10 actually.
  • riju78
hi karthik, in malayalam how did u miss 'annarakkanna vaa' from BHRAMARAM.... and 'kuzhaloothum' from the same film is a good song too..the other songs u might like are 'muthe muthe' sung by sujatha from KAANAA KANMANI and 'priyanu maathram njan' from ROBINHOOD.
  • Karthik
Thanks Jeeka...will listen to the Malayalam songs you've mentioned!
  • In telugu, I feel Rajulakey Raraju from Anjaneyulu and Raja or Yele from Ganesh deserved a place....

In tamil, Gramam Thedi Vada from Moscovin Kaveri was an innovative track which didn't find a place in this list.

Mazha njan from Doctor Patient is a lesser known but scintillating track in malayalam. And if I'm not wrong, I think you missed out on one of the best songs of this year in malayalam--Melle Melle from Sagar Alias Jacky. You should hear it if you haven't yet..... and Pakalonnu is better than Anuraga, IMHO, bcoz of the latter being influenced by Rafta Rafta from Hulchul, although it's vidyasagar's own.

Connections was a very good album too.
  • telkan
Top 3 soundtracks of 2009 in Telugu according to me with respect to lyrical strength, tune and appeal and not necessarily all of them together are:

    Oy
    Konchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam
    Kalavaramaye Madilo

For the Top 10 songs, i would definitely include the following:
chinukai Varadai - Village Lo Vinayakudu
Anandhama - Konchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam
    Gaalamesi Pattina Chepa - Pravarakhyudu
  • amitsri
Totally agree with Tejas here. Dev D. turned out to be an evergreen album whereas Dilli-6 fizzled out after initial deserving hpe. For me, Dev D. is the top album. Though, if I've to choose a song, it would be rehna tu or kaminey.
  • Jaydeep
    Tejas,

Completely agree with OLLO, that thing grew on me like anything. It was indeed a zingy mix of funky sounds.

Dev D - a pathbreaking album of the year, yes for sure. But thoroughly entertaining not quite sure. For me 14 songs ended up being too much and those punju tracks are totally a misfit & take away a lot from otherwise an incredible album.

    Karthik,
I am not sure if you have checked out american pop artist Lady GaGa. She has had a terrific year. Check out her last hit Bad Romance, it showcases one of the best vocal arrangements/sound productions I've heard in recent times. Check out the song here:

I thought Ninaithale Inikkum deserved a place in the top 10 in Tamil. I will have to agree with your Hindi line-up though.

Here's wishing you in advance a very happy new year.. Cheers Karthik.
  • shoaibmdz
Well, a nice compilation of all the lists, among which I know only Hindi, Kannada and English. But, I wonder, how Dhan Te Nan is not included, even in the top 20, acc to me, it was THE biggest hit of the year!! I loved your choice of pickin SEL for the composer of the year, they have given numerous hits, which were just overshadowed every time. I think they're gonna be even bigger with MNIK in 2010. Amit Trivedi, this guy is definitely gonna go a long way, I have loved all his songs till date, even the background scores, one of them being Wake UP S!d, which I've still been looking for. :(
And yea, in Kannada, I still feel Love Guru's songs were good, they're really pleasant to listen. And yeah, Raghu Dixit is definitely on a roll.
  • Excitement of writing about a soundtrack I love ran through my fingers (not that way dirty :P). So the typos from the previous post,
Release last year = OST released last year
    26/1=26/11
  • DEV D hands down owned this year. Yes, it was released last year, but there has not been an album as tremendous as this. I still listen to the songs almost every day, and it has not been a momentary attraction like Delhi 6. Second would be Kaminey and D-6, sorry to say, slips to number 3. Also if I had to give an extra leeway, I would give it to OLLO because it never got a fair chance in the first place (released after the week of 26/1). But boy that was such a supercool melange of sound!
  • Jaydeep
If I were to pick my fav album of the year..it would go to TUM MILE..one album which I have heard repeatedly without fast forwarding any song. Compositions, lyrics, arrangements & vocals all compliment each other superbly, its just perfect in its entirety.

What will be your pick, Karthik?
  • Very nice to see you have picked Sarvam as top because this is my most fav track of 2009.

Well where is Nandalala? have you particularly ignored since it is not yet released?
  • Jaydeep
Yup, totally agree with Rishi, top ten soundtracks of the decade would be great. Also top ten artists would be a great feature to read. It will be really difficult just to settle down with ten though, as there has been a hell lot of good music in this decade.

Other songs that I like apart from the top 20 list of Hindi songs are aahun aahhun (LAK), Tum Mile (Neeraj version), Pocket mein Rocket (Rocket Singh), Blue title track, Payaliya (dev D), Dhan te nan (kaminey), Rasiya (kurbaan), khudaya khair (abhijeet version), tera hone laga hun (APKGK) & kya karoon (Wake up Sid).

I think Pritam has had a terrific year too, but as karthik rightly said in one of the reviews goodness of SEL's good work is too difficult to be ignored.
  • Rishi
    Solid list.

A feature that might be worth your time -- a top ten of the decade (just soundtracks, perhaps). Would be interesting to see how music has evolved, how the new stacks up against the old, etc.
  • Honhaar Goonda
The title of the song is "School of Rock"; it plays at the end of the movie. This song came to me mind first when I heard Ek Hulchul Si. In fact, Ek Hulchul Si wasn't my favorite song when I first heard the album; it grew on me. It is a very trippy song, for me.

Anyway, am not saying it is a copy. Just that both sound similar if you take the drumming out. The arrangements of the both song is similar.
  • Charanftp3
And what about Chinnan Sirisu from KPKP?..I remember you writing about it in your recent picks as well..and usually the songs in those list make it to the top 10!..And Chinnan Sirisu is wayyyyy better than Oru Kal,Oru Vetkam Varudhe(?),Karuga Mani and Vaanam Pudhidhu!...
  • Karthik
Charanftp3: Don't think Yogi deserves that high a praise!

Viraajan: Yes, I'm eagerly looking forward to Goa too!

arunm: If 'understanding' means liking songs that were liked by public, I think I'm better off now :-)

Honhaar Goonda: Totally with you on 'Ek hulchul si', my fave track from Dev.D. Need to listen to Teacher's Pet now!!
  • Karthik
Gopi Chand: Agree on licking every track in Delhi 6 :-). Oy is in top 'cos it was really good, IMO!
  • Karthik
Sriram: Gulal is one of the best films I've seen this year - seen it twice and enjoyed it thoroughly both times! The music is equally amazing too!
  • Karthik
thechordmaster: Azhagarmalai is the only (IIRR) Ilayaraja soundtrack that got a 200 word review from me - love it!! I'm not that fond of either Karthik Anita (despite having my name :-)) or Angaadi Theru!
  • Karthik
ashcoounter: Yes, Rehna Tu is indeed brilliant. I thought hard of adding 2 songs from Delhi 6 in the top 10, but they deserve it.
  • Honhaar Goonda
For me, it has been a very disappointing year. It started very promisingly with Dev.D and then Dilli 6, but it later fazed out. These are the only two only film soundtracks, that are worth listening. If I was just to pick only a song from an album, then I find it very difficult to come up with top 10, so here are my top 5:

    1. Masakli (for its pure uniqueness and Mohit Chauhan)
    2. Ek Hulchul Si (I love this song cos of Joi - this song would've been number 1 for me, if it didn't remind me of Teacher's Pet track from School Rock)
    3. Raat Ke Musafir; Gulaal
    4. Delhi Destiny; 99 (This is one of the most underrated song of the year, imo)
    5. It is a toss between Kaminey and Barso Yaaro. Nah, I'll go for Kar Kar Hara Mein by Kailash Kher from his album Yatra. Brilliant album.

I would classify 2009 year as the most over-hyped year... in the Indian music industry.
  • arunm
    Azhagar malai :)
    Bhagya devatha :)
Shan Rahman's Two tracks from 'Pattanathil bhootham' was much better than umpteenth time recycled bhagya devatha..
Also Pularumo,Venal kattil(Ritu) was huge hits kerala..
Hope you 'understand' more malayalam songs in future.. :)
  • Voila!!!!!! Amazing list! Sad year for Tamil? But i guess 2009 is better than 2008. 2008 was boredom :(

At last, Yuvan conquers the No. 1 spot, which has hitherto been Vidyasagar's! :)

And, what surprised me the most is, you have missed "Kannil Dhagam" from Achchamundu. What a track boss. I hope you at least considered this song while preparing the list :)

Undoubtedly, Yuvan shankar raja is the composer of the year. He is in incredible form. Eagerly awaiting Goa.
  • Charanftp3
Your Tamil list is very unconvincing..I'd pick Yaarodu Yaaro as the best song of the year, just for the scintillating use of saarangi..And no mention of yogi anywhere in the list?!..
  • Gopi Chand
Oy (Telugu) #1 ?? what happened to Banam,Kick and Konchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam ? i agree with Kavya's dairy and Leader. Oy because of Yuvan Factor ? No Pazzhasi Raja in Malayalam ??? anyway its your personal list. cool.
    My Picks in telugu
    1.Aunana Kadana (Leader,Micky J. Meyer)
    2.Egire (KIKK,SEL)
    3.Raja maharaja (Ganesh,Micky J. Meyer)
    4.Atu Nuvve Itu Nuvve (Current,DSP)
    5.Megham Madhuram (Joy(Illamai itho itho)Vidyasagar)
    6.Kadile Padam (Banam, Manishrma)
    7.hayire Hayire (Kavya's Dairy,Manu Ramesan)
    8.Meghama (Prayanam,Mahesh Shankar)
    9.Gore Gore (Kick,Thaman)
    10.Chinna Polike (Om Shanti,Ilayaraja)

I think u missed Rayilin Padhayil(Appavi) and gujju gujju goods (Aval Peyar Tamilarasi) Enge nee sendralum(Kanukkulle) from tamil.

    neelathamara,Delhi6,DevD was just expected.

From delhi6 i ll pick every track.:-)
  • Sriram
Agree on this year's Milliblog List. I'm glad you picked Gulaal -- It had a brilliant score and a even better BGM. Unfortunately, not many saw this one-of-the-best-2009-movie.

Delhi-6 & Dev D were flawless. SEL churned out great stuff in 13B, LAK & Wake up Sid. Sad, not many noticed their efforts - Although, Shotkut was 'dimag-ko-shot'. Their single track in CCTC - would be in my TOP 20.

And, I guess you could also make a list of the worst-composed songs of the year, and the most un-inspiring composer(s). That'd add a bit more fun - we've had some truly outstanding awful stuff this year.

    What say?
  • thechordmaster
    azhagar malai?
whoa i guess u overstepped bro....nywyz its ur opinion...
karthik anitha would take the spot in my book..

    not to forget angaadi theru

And plzzzzzz write/twit somethin, anythin bout the vinnai thaandi audio launch....the excitement is unbearable
  • ashcoounter
Rehna Tu will be my no.1

With a stunning continuum fingerboard ending and great soothing vocals from ARR this was miles ahead of any Indian music that we got to hear in 2009.

Another song is Dhol yara dhol and it is missing from your list.
