Music review: My Name Is Khan (Hindi – Shankar Ehsaan Loy)

Posted by: Karthik In: Hindi OST

Sajda is exceptionally lilting; the combination of Rahat, Shankar and Richa Sharma works brilliantly. Tere naina follows a by-now-familiar, trio-template tune, but still makes for beautiful listening – Shafqat’s singing and a remarkable chorus. Rashid Khan’s pious Allah hi rahem is barely functional while Suraj Jagan and Shankar Mahadevan recreate the Rock On magic in Rang De, with its amiable rock sound. Noor-e-khuda is clearly the soundtrack’s best, with Adnan and Shreya joining Shankar in a tune that navigates from lovely pop to bewitching, tabla-driven portions; the chorus, in particular, is extraordinary. Solid start to the year, by the trio!

Although KJo influence can obviously be felt, trio has done a great job.
Noor-e Khuda sure is best of the lot, Rang de & Sajda are awesome too. I feel Richa Sharma clearly steals the show in Sajda.

Plus the Khan theme song is average, it SEL would've done a much better job with that.. Surprised that it aint mentioned in the review... :)

Except Tere kali ankhon.. and two lines following what's the similarity b/w sajda and ikatara? jus 2 lines reminds iktara and that's it.. And i don't think it has shades of ya rabba.

On the other hand Rang de sounds very Rock on + Wake up sid ish.

And the soundtrack is rated so low like 3/5 consistently.. Anyways I'm in love with every track except Rang de. Allah hi Rahem is good too.

@rickypc. I completely agree with you on that similarity. Whenever I hum sajda i keep going into ya rabba... Sajda is the only track iv heard in this OST and I quite liked it and the album seems promising. I hope SEL delivers this time, last year except for they had A 'Luck by Chance'. pun intended.

Tere Naina is very nice but typical SRK track.
Sajda is lifting, yes, but reminds me of Iktara(as ptd out by someone) and Mitwa from KANK- the back ground tabla esp.
Noor e khuda is a very good listen- it has a TZP feel in the beginning.
Rang De seems to be inspired by Rock On soundtrack.
Allah hi rahem. the starting lines gives me a feeling the tune's been inspired by Amit trivedi's Haara in Aamir.

all in all a decent but disappointing soundtrack.

disappointing album for me i would say.. atleast in comparison to london dreams which was their last one. that album showed more signs of versatility.. anyways i love noor e khuda / sajda to some extent and even rang de. sajda sounds like iktara as many have pointed out noor e khuda reminded of jeene ke ishare also at parts. but as someone mentioned earlier, i do think SEL are getting repetitive

    Sajda reminds me of Iktara.

I am glad SEL are using some other singers besides Shankar. It gives some of the songs a new sound (to say the least) - though mostly most of the songs are so SEL'ish :-). Good album nevertheless.

Sajda and Noor-E-Khuda are pretty nice. For some reason when I hear the catch line - 'Sajda, karu main tera sajda', I instantly think of another SEL song - 'Ya rabba, dede koi jaan bhi agar'. Similiar phrasing I suppose.

Sajda and Noor-E-Khuda are the gems of this album. Rang De is decent. I m completely hooked on to Noor-e-Khuda too. Shankar Mahadevan has simply taken this song to great heights with his sensational singing. Kudos to the trio.

LOL! Nothing 'happened' to me, I simply happen to like the OST :-)

    @Honhaar Goonda
I to have the same opinion..
"I liked the starting bit of Noor-E-Khuda but then Karan Johar took over the song"

    Its as expected.. cliched..
    what more to say..

@dont know what happened with Karthik..
  • Honhaar Goonda
Hmmm. Isn't it this more like KANK? After hearing it few times, am still finding it a bit contrived. I liked the starting bit of Noor-E-Khuda but then Karan Johar took over the song; it became so cheesy - i started visualizing its cheesy 'picturization'.

I think, the lyrics are poor as well, so it doesn't help either.

I don't blame SEL - they are a top composers - but I wish they stepped out sometimes.... Don't mind them doing "it's the time to disco" now & then.

selrocks: Hmm, no, not 200 word material, IMO. There's a particular feel to this album that is very, very SEL - a bit typecast that way.

Honhaar Goonda: I'm not a big fan of the Karan Johar style of music - didn't like KANK either despite the world going gaga over it. But this one seems like an honest and good effort to me.
  • Honhaar Goonda
Yet again they've composed a lame soundtrack! It lacks creativity, respect and class. Unbelievably cheesy!

Karthik i thought it deserved more than a 100 words review :( Awesome soundtrack..!

    Which is your fav track?
