Music review: Goa (Tamil – Yuvan Shankar Raja)

Posted by: Karthik In: Tamil OST

Goa’s soundtrack is interestingly split into two dramatically different parts. The native folk flavour is heady in 3 tracks – the unbelievably-Raja’ish and hyper-catchy Yezhezhu thalamuraikkum; the mid-80s pathos track that thought we had thankfully left behind, Ooru nalla ooru, and the surprisingly non-descript Adida nayandiya – but only one really works. The more mod Yuvan we know of is evident across the other 5 tracks. Of this, the title song and its club mix hold scintillating appeal with its uniquely Sean Paul-like sound, while Andrea rocks the already lovely ballad’ish tune of Idhu varai! Valiba vaa vaa is trendy, gets great support from Raja and SPB’s vocals and the fusion that Yuvan smartly weaves in as Chitra joins later. Yuvan’s familiar, almost-offkey solo, Kaadhal endral, starts off well with his trademark,  violins and even as he falters in the vocals at places, it still makes for a heartfelt song! Idai vazhi is Yuvan doing a Rahman – he lets go of his usual style and experiments brilliantly; Mamtha Mohandas, without the Devi Sri Prasad’ish synthetic vocalizing at last, sounds mighty good in her real voice, along with Benny Dayal. Goa’s soundtrack is exhilarating – Yuvan opens the year in style!

Well i was personally elated at hearing Paiya, atleast for its
reggae'sh tunes and managing to create an awesome sensation.

@Karthik: Of-late its increasingly becoming painful to catch up with all the latest releases (that includes but not limited to tracking them, reading reviews, hearing untamed, listening it again, getting it developed and giving ur own version).I used to listen some albums for more than two months and now with the rapid advent,i believe that the true musical proliferation is bounded that the feelings derived out of a particular music is getting deteriorated!

Nice Album.Valiba Vaa , Idhu Varai and Idai Vizhi are very impressive.

Idai Vizhi is more comparable to Rahman's Nenjam Ellam from Azhutha Ezhuthu.

This soundtrack really deserves those 200 words, a fantastic, fabulous album from Yuvan! Even the 3 village tracks are very catchy and enjoyable, but Yuvan shows his immense talent in the more "urban" part of the album. Idai vizhi is mindblowing and breathtaking. Excellent starting by Yuvan!

truely a superb album but suprised that no-one's commented on the peppy Vaaliba Vaa Vaa!

Idai vazhi and Idhu varai is too good and agree with Dreamer: Ajeesh is way better than Andrea! personally feels she ruined a beautiful track! :D
  • Absolutely a mind-blowing album and an extraordinary album to start the year. Wow....

Idai vazhi - what an experiment. Yuvan is reaching greater heights.

I loved the adida naiyandi song as well :)

Arun: Exactly what I had in mind when I dragged that Rahman comparison :-)

Heard it again after your 200 word review ....started liking some of the tracks ..............unlike many of yuvan's albums this did not create that impact at the first hearing .....Idaivazhi is my pick from the album ... Title track is also quite good ...

Ajeesh is that guy from Airtel Super Singer ?
  • I have to agree with the common opinion. The new year has made you far more generous in your reviews.

My pick of the album is Idhu Varai. And I actually think Ajeesh outshines Andrea.
  • fusion + trendy
  • Thanks for the review. Did not read your review. Will listen to the songs and come back here :)

    200 Words - I'm not surprised. I knew it already :)
  • Karthik
:-) To be absolutely frank, I wanted to not like the soundtrack when I started to listen to the songs - but I loved it!

Hmm. That was a gushing review for an album which is just decent. I guess you made up your mind that it has all the ingredients to be a commercial hit. And I am worried that you are going Taran Adarsh's way of late with your music reviews. I request milliblog to be as stringent as it was till 2008. :)
