Music review: Admissions Open (Hindi – Amit Trivedi)

Posted by Karthik

Aasman ke paar is sure to give Whigfield a complex, with its prosaic dancepop sound. Dariya ubale is where Amit’s DevD roots surface, thankfully – the grungy sound is pitch-perfect. Naresh Iyer is flawless in the breezy Meri rooh, a compelling melody on the lines of Iktara, with addictive phrases. Mother-son duo, Kavita and Kavish Seth croon Music hi hai, a conversational banter, with an endearing soft rock style, while Shruti Pathak gets the pick of the soundtrack, Roshni – a kick-ass track involving assortment of genres, arranged brilliantly! Beyond that oddball opening track, the rest is very, very Amit!

What is this with Amit Trivedi and Rahman’s good works always pitting against each other!

And yeah, where do you hear these songs, pray tell!!

  • Karthik

This soundtrack was launched yesterday. Having run Milliblog for 5+ years, if I don’t get a heads-up from relevant people about such soundtracks…what’s the point? :-) I believe the CD is out…it’s at least with me, through certain connections ;-)

The plot of this movie looks like “Accepted”. Waiting to be able to put my hands on the music, however, has grim possibilities. :(

  • Sriram

Which is this movie? Where’s the trailer? Who stars in this movie? Who’s the director? Why are there so many un-answered questions?!

  • Lakshmish

Another superb soundtrack from amith trivedi. Meri Rooh is a gorgeous track.

  • Karthik

Sriram: I continue to have the same questions. But…I did a short interview with Kavita Seth a few weeks back – http://itwofs.com/milliblog/2010/03/14/kavita-seth-to-sing-for-amit-trivedi-again/

…so, in a way, if you’d been reading Milliblog, you’d have known to expect this :-)

  • Sriram

Karthik: Oh, I did read the interview then. But then I thought the producers would release some promos or trailer announcing the project. Hopefully they’d do at least now.

  • Honhaar Goonda

Dariya Ubale – now I like this song. Rest of the album is popish.

  • Dhruv

    Finally!

An Amit Trivedi soundtrack after more than an year..

Loved Roshni, Dariya Ubale, Aasma Ke (Club Mix), Meri Rooh and Music Hi Hai in that order..

Raavan vs. Admissions Open.. To me, Round #1 goes to AO. That might be because it is more ‘easy to listen’..

And for Trivedi fans, lots to come :)

Dhruv, actually Udaan from that list is going to be screened at Cannes next month. Wish they could release the music earlier.

HG – Roshani is not pop, it’s jazz. Other songs, somewhat pop but for me, that is the pop I like, such as say the stuff from Of Montreal or Regina Spektor. Heck I even liked Aasmaan ke Paar, but what was that familiar sound in the beginning of the club mix?

  • Arun

‘Roshni’ rocks! Kinda like Payaliya from Dev D. Shruti has nailed it. Liked the breezy ‘Music Hi Hai’ as well :)

  • Arun

Forgot to mention ‘Meri Rooh’. Really soulful track!

i had a great expectation abt this guy….but he couldnt reach……cause he is still…..in his horizons….not coming out of it…………music of this album is gud……but lacks innovation…..freshness………same thing again……dev d extension……….

  • crichessill

@ ravi, everyone has his own opinion, but just thought i’d add that amit trivedi set a benchmark in terms of versatility in one album. he had 17 songs which encompassed all types of genre you can fathom. so all his soundtracks he can ever come up with unfortunatey will feel like dev d hangover :(

  • ravi_kumar9111

he had enough time of almost 1 year to refine and come up with a kind of music which would give him an edge…..i dont think this will give him that…….i expected it……if he wants to make it big and make his name ……he must leave his horizons and climb new heights……….dev d was really awesome this album is gud…….but this will not give him an upper edge in the modern composers……if he is giving an album in year……then they must b in the top chart not only as hits but also in terms of quality and versatility…..he should not repeat singers………if he repeats singing style must be different……….i expect this guy to groe

I listened to this one over the weekend.

I like Roshni, Meri Rooh & dariya in that order. I love the way AT uses Indian instruments and yet keeps the western jazz feel intact in Roshni. Meri Rooh scores high for his melody & Naresh Iyer’s pitch perfect vocals, while Dariya is unmistakably AT, only reason it is at bottom on my fav list is coz’ IMO Shon Pinto has slightly overdone the feel.

Asmaan ke paar falls in the formula music trap, while there is something amiss in music hai, don’t know what, but it doesn’t work for me.

This may not be the best follow up to DevD or Iktara & background score in WUS, but is still good enough to establish the fact that AT is one of the best things to have happened to Bollywood music in long time.
