I Am (Music review), Hindi – Amit Trivedi, Rajiv Bhalla & Vivek Philip

Posted by Karthik

Wundoo yeredoo‘s multi-lingual mix is fabulously packaged in a pulsating techno wrapper. Rajiv Bhalla’s other song, Bhojhal se works big time with its affecting tune and KK’s engaging vocals. Karthik tries hard in Vivek Philip’s Aankhein, but it is largely staid. Then…we have Amit Trivedi! The musical nuances in Baangur and Saye saye are undeniably Amit, but…a few notes here, an instrument there…the stereotype shows, disappointingly so! It is more pronounced in Issi baat pe that sounds like Ek hulchul si‘s rough draft, despite being highly listenable. I Am has an interesting soundtrack, but it isn’t compelling enough…despite Amit Trivedi.

    Dear user
Amit trivedi has withdrawn all existing social networking communications from you and now considers you stranger.

Amit’s standard templates were evident to me from Udaan.
Predominantly Rustic / Folkish vocals (or) Mellow vocals + Rock oriented arrangements took us by surprise in Aamir, Dev D and the initial soundtracks. But he has become overindulgent. I hope he breaks this pattern and avoid getting typecasted like other mediocre composers.
Haara Haara from Aamir still remains his most outlandish track.
As far as this album is concerned. the spark was evident in ludes of Baangur and Saye Saye and the rest was blah.

There was only one Folkish vocals + Rock arrangement track in Udaan, so we will spare that from the discussion.

For other songs that template worked fine, because the character had rather mellow aspirations of becoming a poet, with a rebellious force.

Then NOKJ was a different story. However, I do agree about the existence of a template which might be because most of all films he has worked on were ‘issue based challenging story line’ films. Aisha was quite an accomplished attempt for an out-and-out commercial project.

I do wish he breaks out of the mold, because his style is becoming easy to imitate for its simplicity. Recently Sachin-Jigar has done it reasonably well with the songs of Shor. There needs to be a larger variety pool of subjects, and please drop the harmonium for a while!

Hey, I liked Aisha too. Infact it was my most favorite album last year.
As far as Udaan goes I have earlier described it as a collection of rejected songs for Dev D. I still feel the same except for Aazadiyan which I like. But thats just me. :)
The folkish vocals were the basis in many other songs starting from Chakkar Ghumyo, Oh Pardesi, Maahi Menu, Delhi etc.. And three fourth of his songs has rock based percussion and extensive electric guitar which brings in the familiarity factor. Agree that the subjects he gets demands such music. But he looks to be a very selective guy. So I guess he has been choosing projects with similar themes which resulted in this stereotyping. I hope he works with Anurag kashyap often and on subjects which lets him explore different genres. And lol on your harmonium comment.

You can add the Fanta jingle to your list as well.

I totally see that. I have been critical of Vishal and Shekhar for their staidness during the releases of their soundtracks for Anjana Anjani, Break k Baad and I hate Luv stories. All of them sounded pretty much same to me then, because of similar themes and closer release time. I expressed my displeasure on this very blog.

Now I look back and listen to those three albums, and I do find stuff worth appreciating. They are not perfect albums, and I do wish they drop that template of using large semi/full English phrase every third line in their songs. But there are songs that would stay long with me.

Similar situation is happening with Amit Trivedi songs as well. The non-mainstream stuff is happening too close and too often. AT and V-S seem to be falling into the unfortunate SRK pattern where stereotypical takes over some good talent, when they should be aiming to do different stuff like Aamir Khan. But I do hope that down the line I can pick something out of each AT and V-S album that stays with me forever, without having to worry about all of them sounding the same.

I think Vishal Shekhar should try a serious movie, like Udaan, or Rang de Basanti. That would be interesting!!

The song Baangur is cut from the same stone as “Naav” from Udaan., which incidentally was one of my favourite songs of last year.

Doesn’t make me love it any less though.

I think this is the future of hindi music. With multiple composers per album, why would the movie director want Amit Trivedi to sound different? He can always pick and choose musical styles for each of the songs and go to a composer specializing in that style. Would you expect a Micheal Jackson to sound like Beatles?

isi baat pe is the first song I’ve disliked from amit trivedi. maybe its the KK factor. it tried too hard to be amit trivedi. I had no clue what the song was trying to be. baangur was still good but vintage amit trivedi. i’m afraid vintage amit trivedi might indicate stereotypical amit soon. the interlude was awesome.

some time when you trying doing some different thing in every song the mood of that song will die, let the song be as simple as possible. because what Amit Trivedi is trying to do is he confusing people with his complicated music arrangement and it works some time not always so when the tune is simple to hear, people will immediately hum that song. so I might be wrong I don’t know but Amit Trivedi’s music is complicated for me. sorry…!!!

Great songs..Actually Aankhein is a song with depth,it is true that beginning as well as ending is little stale, but once u get hold of the song u will start appreciating it..There are minor touches u will miss if u listen it just once..Amit Trivedi back in form after a dip in form after Dev D..I feel that it is Onir magic here because he has the knack to get best out of multiple MD’s and come up with a cohesive album..For me this album is on par with his masterpiece Bas Ek Pal where also there were multiple MD’s but as an album which worked big time..
