The best of Ilayaraja in Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam?

Posted by Karthik

Let me start with a confession.

Despite having been a massive fan of Ilayaraja ever since I remember, I heard ‘Jotheyali’ from the 1980 Kannada film Geetha…for the first time in my life…in 2008. Yes, *ashamed*. Wait, there’s more.

I heard ‘Emani ne’ from the 1983 Telugu film Mantrigari Viyyankudu…in 2011. Yes, last year…for the first time in my life.

I’m not very pleased with this serious lapse, obviously, since I was hooked to both these songs, hopelessly, for weeks. As is my usual habit, I went on a massive hunt of other songs from these films and other Ilayaraja songs from the same time period…in the silly hope of recreating my childhood memory of listening to a wonderful, new Ilayaraja song for the first time, but with the complete awareness of everything I have heard since. Think of like how Marty McFly felt when he traveled back to the past, in Back To The Future.

But, my enthusiasm was short-lived. Yes, I did love Geetha’s entire soundtrack, but could not find as many gems as these songs…though, I have to admit – Geetha’s title song went ahead of Jotheyali in my mind! The problem was that there are way too many songs to sift through and it was like trying to live a 20 year period in 1 day, with a lot of bad, average songs thrown in. I couldn’t find another Jotheyali or Emani ne and this could be entirely my wrong choices in random sampling. And I haven’t even entered Raja’s Malayalam repertoire yet!

Just to give you an example of the way I found the random search disappointing – I stumbled on this song, ‘Chiki chiki cha…’ on YouTube, after searching for desperate keywords like ‘Ilayaraja Telugu hit song list’ (amongst others). I could not find it again now (and couldn’t find the film’s name either!), but I recall it featured Chiranjeevi, Radha and a horse, if my memory serves right. This is a song that I would have gone ga-ga over…I could smell Nizhalgal’s ‘Poongadhave’ from a distance, when I heard the opening music. But it was a bit too similar to many, many Raja songs for comfort…with my current awareness of his Tamil range. Had I listened to it for the first time when it released, it would have been my anthem. Still, I did like the song for nostalgia’s sake, but it wasn’t a stand-out song for me, like the 2 songs mentioned above.

So, that brings me to the point of this very selfish post. I seem to be gleefully unaware of many Ilayaraja gems only because I haven’t explored his music beyond Tamil. And this means 3 more languages – Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Don’t bother including Hindi, by the way.

If you consider the above 2 songs as a yardstick, which non-Tamil Ilayaraja songs should I not miss before I die?

I may not have the time to instantly or immediately listen to all that you list, but I WILL listen to them all somehow or someday…one of these days. There’s nothing more joyous than reliving the blissful past with the complete knowledge and awareness of the present. What I aim to do, eventually, for my personal benefit and to the benefit of others like me who care enough, is to make a personal favorite list of Raja’s non-Tamil range.

I know that is a lofty goal, but I have got to start somewhere, right?

Just three songs which came to my mind soon after I read your post.

May be you have checked them out earlier, but then they are
“Unarumee Gaanam” – Moonnam Pakkam (1988)
“(Ilam) Poonkaattinodum Kilikalodum” – Poomukhappadiyil Ninneyum Kaathu. (1986)
    “Devasangeetham” – Guru (1997)

    Malayalam songs, all of them.

  • arun revi

Would recommend the following Malayalam albums of Raja sir if you havnt already listened:
    1) OST for Moonnam pakkam esp Unarumee ganam
    2) OST for Kaalapani..esp Chempuuve, Kottum Kuzhal Vizhi
    3) Olathumpathu fm Pappayude swandham Appoos
    4) Would add OST for Season (1989). This went largely unnoticed but trust me, the BGM was awsome for those times ;)

    • http://twitter.com/nidsutd Noushad

Karthick don’t miss out Moonam Pakkam ,It’s epic stuff…Sadly the quality is quite bad , That is for modern day headphones

  • jeanjohny

Try these Malyalam movie songs by Raja:
    1. Pappayude Swantham Appus
Olathumbhathirunnu, Snehathin Poonchola, En Poove etc.
    2.Ente sooryaputhrikku.
    3. Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal
       Ghanasyama song is superb!
    4. Moonam Pakkam had nuanced compositons.
    5. Aa RathriKiliye
        Kiliye mani mani megha.
    6. Olangal, all 3 songs.
    7. Oru Yaathramozhi
    8. Ponmudippuzhayorathu – Oru Chiri kandal song is good.
    9. Poomukhappadiyil Ninneyum Kathu- both the songs atre good.

    • http://twitter.com/nidsutd Noushad

Funny how i like alot of songs in your list (Being a mallu ) but without the realization that these are IR efforts.

      • jeanjohny

I’m a Keralite too and a die hard AR Rahman fan. But I love most of IR work and always look forward to his work. He is a maestro in true sense!

I still remember getting goosebumps when I heard Raja sing Varna Vrindhavanam from Kaliyoonjal!

And I feel that Karthik should get a list of Vidyasagar songs in Malayalam movies. He really got a break after he started composing in Malayalam movies. He could always get the feel right and it’s so difficult to say that the composer is not a malayalee but a Telugu man! Hats off to that genius for his brilliant compositions!

        • http://twitter.com/nidsutd Noushad

The thing is know most of these songs only from TV when i was a kid . Also for Mallu movies i associate songs with actors than MD . Being a Mohanlal fan i know almost all of his songs but am largely unaware as to who the composer is . It’s only recently i have become very composer-centric when it comes to music .
Even the movie Yodha , I love the songs from it but only recently i realized it was by ARR . And yes a list like this for Vidyasagar would be very apt , As his best work is in Malayalam .

  • jeanjohny

Kiliye Kiliye song from Aa Rathri

Tz a superb movie infact with Sivaji Ganesan and Mohanlal in the lead

    • http://twitter.com/nidsutd Noushad

The mp3 Track of this is not an easy find i tell you,Guess since it was an horrible movie , The song didn’t get that much attention , Surprised to see you mention it. I always thought i was the only idiot still hooked onto this…

      • jeanjohny

I loved this song from the very first listen.. I was in 7th or 8th std at that time.. And the Rahman fever was widespread at that time, too! Between, I liked the movie too, but was a flop I guess!

        • http://twitter.com/nidsutd Noushad

Yeah the movie was a dud..But the song is a beauty

    • evandi

      thx

  • Bharath Raghavendra

Going by your penchance for melodies , I’d like to suggest ‘Kalaya Nijama’ from Coolie No 1 and ‘Janavule’ from Aditya 369.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/VS6G6YJAR56AFKHMNGJVPORTMM Amarnath

The song from Mantrigaari Viyyankudu is a great one. There’s a song from the movie Kondaveeti Donga that has Chiranjeevi, Radha with a horse. It’s a great song. I am not sure if that is what you were refering to. You can see that song at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SStGf59b-uU. I remember being taken over by this in my 7th or 8th class. That also album has another foot tapping song in Chamaku Chamaku Cha (which starts off with the words you used) … at least SPB’s intro -
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtw52HcDwKo.

If I change the words of what you had a bit, I can think of Jigi Jigi Ja from Chettu Kinda Pleader (A Vamsy – Ilayaraja musical) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2fYTBWtTX8. The sound of this album is a bit tacky … I think on purpose.

Hopefully the song you were looking for is one of these.

There are several Ilayaraja gems in Telugu as you mentioned.

    • milliblog

Yes!! Sorry for the mistake – the Kondaveeti Donga song was the one I was referring to, and got confused with another tune.

  • manoj raj

I will give a very small list of other language songs i recently heard which are too good (IMO). Skip them if you have already heard.

    1. Poovai virinju -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLHJ3vxLo7A 2. En Poove - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFrqd5X83fg3. Erikanal kaatil (sung by MSV and music by IR) - http://www.in.com/music/oru-yathramozhi/songs-44517.html4. Vennello Godari - http://www.raaga.com/play/?id=194522 (i have heard the original version in tamil)http://www.facebook.com/groups/raajaphony/ - This is a closed group where our Raaja sir fans(music enthusiasts) introduce some rare(at least to me) songs from tamil cinema.

http://www.orkut.co.in/Main#Community?cmm=46219149  – In this orkut community, there will be a thread titled Malayalam compositions by maestro.

  • Rajasekaran Krishnakumar

Prema ledani, eduta neeva edalo, manchu kurisi vela – abhinandana (1988-telugu), malli malli, nee meedha naakku (similarity with ninnu kori and dilwale raat hai from mahadev is very clear) – rakshashadu (1985- telugu), mizhiyil (striking resemblance to vellai pura ondru) – sandhayakku virinja poovu (1983-mal) (, kannanthumbi poramo - Kakothikaavile Appupandhadikal (1986-mal) – minnaminungum, vaalettuzhidiya – Onnaanu nammal (1984-mal)

    • jeanjohny

I guess Kakothikaavile Appoppanthadikal was not by ILaiyaraja, but by Ouseppachan. Nevertheless, it is a super song!

      • Rajasekaran Krishnakumar

Yeah..it is a mistake !!! it came in while i was simultaneously mailing my friend !!! indeed it is ousepachchan.but a good composition similar to Raja songs…must listen

  • kuppurao

Its hard to say what you might have missed, for, sorry for the cliche, I don’t know what it is that you know. I have been a Raja fan, consciously anyways, only for the last 15-16 years and I can tell you fan is an understatement of what I am to Raja. He has composed probably about 4500 songs, many of which are average. Fishing out the good ones involves lot of time and effort. For the less committed, it involves chance. The one thing I can tell you with conviction is that you can safely assume there are probably some greater songs unknown to you than the ones you do know. This is not a random or a fanboyish thought, I have uncovered many by chancing on them. But you can safely assume you know a good majority of them.

  • kuppurao

Btw, you may have listened to Jotheyalli very recently, but you have listened to Vizhiyile from Nooraavadhu Naal, right?

  • http://twitter.com/nidsutd Noushad

Well ill attempt to give a partial list of his work in Malayalam. At least his noteworthy ones .

    1) Olangal
    2) Sadhayakku Virinja Poovu
    3) Unaru
    4) Poomukha Padiyil Ninnayum Kathu (Got a brilliant track)
    5) Moonam Pakkam (My personal Fav )
    6) Adharvam ( Got a couple of good songs ,One is a Jungle se

  • Narendra Bendi

I think the song you are referring to from Chiranjeevi film is Rudranetra

  • Sathish K

Don’t feel ashamed. Born in 80s I grew up listening to Illayaraja songs but became a crazy fan of him only since 2003. And since then IR’s melodies are like medicine for me. Well my suggestion would be “Thumbi Vaa” from Olangal, “Vedam Anuvanuvuna” from Sagara sangamam.
PS:- With due respect to ARR, the comment from Chandrasekaranganesh is irrelevant to the post and provocative. Thank god, I didn’t find any major reactions.

  • daydreamer .

Glad you wrote this post. The first three paras read as though some one was speaking my mind.

Born in early 80s ,my initiation with raja’s non-tamil songs started with ‘jotheyalli’ a few years back and man what a song it was. I was completely mesmerised. And again i have to tell you the first telugu song of him which got me hooked was ‘emani ne’ . Since then i have checked out his songs randomly now and then.

Though none could match upto ‘jotheyalli’s awesomeness here are some of my recommendations.

In Kannada  you should definitely listen to the songs from Janma Janmada Anubandha, especially the haunting & scary “Thangaliyalli”, “Preetiside” from Shikari, “I love you” & “Anuraga yenaythu” from the Rajkumar movie Nee nanna gellalare.

My sincere apologies because I am giving this link where you have most of Raja’s songs in best quality that you can download, I am giving this as 90% of those songs are no more in the market. I found this link during my searches for Raja’s non-tamil songs.

Though beyound the point I have to say this. First the notion that there are only a few good ones in the large playlist is farce. It is just you are trying to find what you think is a good listen, that *you* is a sensibility that came by what you grew up with. It will take a long time for me to appreciate a Arabic song, from the picture that was fed to me for long about that culture. I may skip a song like ‘ulagam suthuthada’ which is down right Gramiya song with no pretensions. But can appreciate a carnatic song, even though it is plain routine song. There will be far from few songs when It comes to Raaja, that doesn’t go with the film, plot, characters. Provided that it was communicated to him in properly. SPB says it so many times, even tough he has worked as many songs for others than Raaja. Please don’t force your notion good and bad on him. May be it is not great listen all the time, but it is not meant be. It was made for movie and try to see it in the context.

  • Aditya Grandhi
