Ishaqzaade (Music review), Hindi – Amit Trivedi

Posted by Karthik

Chokra jawan amply demonstrates Vishal Dadlani and Sunidhi’s vocal chemistry – they are electric in this rustic coming-of-age celebration with inventive lyrics; its tune moves to a spectacular band-bajaa sound with an endearing free-flowing’ness! Jhalla wallah does seem to ape Bunty Aur Babli’s Kajra re – and there are many instrumental cues to it as well, but it holds its own fairly well, thanks largely to Shreya Ghoshal’s spectacular singing! The title song starts of dreamily, and maintains that tone even as Javed Ali’s frothy vocals kick-off; but then it meanders into familiar, Rahman-style stock backgrounds; it’s only the tune that retains the magic, however. Divya Kumar and Suraj Jaggan offer a scintillating vocal duet in Aafaton ke parindey; the way the grungy parts are seamlessly laid over fabulously catchy dubstep is typical Mr.Trivedi. The soundtrack’s highlight is clearly the oh-so-gorgeous Pareshaan! Shalmali Kholgade is the find of this soundtrack and she completely owns this song that alternates between the feathery soaked-in-love feel with the hyper enthusiastic ‘Main pareshaan’ outburst; all this, with a rock-folk base best exemplified with the use of harmonium, in tantalizing spots through the song. After his recent low, Amit Trivedi is back, all guns blazing!

Yeah, super songs after going through not so effective recent hindi movie songs!

  • sunilssounds

Haven’t heard the album but knew Pareshaan might have been the best of the album after watching the song trailer :D

seriously? i dint find any repeat value in this album except pareshaan……i would listen to EMAET instead…. cant believe you liked it so much…maybe bcoz its very rahmanish…???

    • http://twitter.com/nidsutd Noushad

EMAET was quite poor compared to his previous works including Aisha .

      • Dev Jyothichand

Well, right. Ek main aur Ekk tu seemed like very standard fare. Listenable, but not as inventive as say, an Aisha. Also, not at all as good as a soundtrack like Dev D.

Afton Ke Parindey & Pareshan are proper ear worms a la Pungi & it would be while before i am done with this song.Waiting for the whole album . Welcome back Amit Trivedi.

Yea great songs but Aafton k parinde from 1:22 sounds so much like Fanaa by ARR

  • http://twitter.com/capzspace Vicky

and almost at the same time, i.e. 1:21 (Fanaa)

“Jhalla wallah …… holds its own fairly well, thanks largely to Shreya Ghoshal’s spectacular singing!”
    Super brilliance on her voice…

    But Pareshan is stunning !

    • Jaydeep

Agree. Shreya actually rises above the scope of the composition. It could’ve sounded pretty ordinary without her vocals.

    Izaqzaade song is Rocking !!!!

Aafatoan ke Parindey  and  Pareshan sounds familiar but good enough to repeat ……

Remix of songs are good not usual remixes we hear in pritam cds

  • Dev Jyothichand

Well, I hope this is as good as you make it out to be. There’s been a drought of good soundtracks lately. Also, the other thing I miss are Sonnenlicht’s postings. I was waiting for his comment on Rockstar and Ek main Aur Ekk Tu, but didn’t get them… oh well, he might be busy.
Also, cheers for getting over that Jannat 2 post with this one. :D
    Take care!

SHALMALI KHOLGADE TAKES THE CAKE.. SHE SOUNDS A BIT FAMILIAR…STILL FIGURING OUT WHOM..

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/OC6724I74FNHBN5B57JEY3CSHI shrz

She has a similar voice quality as Madhushree/ Sujata Bhattacharya and a bit like Rekha Bharadwaj (Yeh rishta kya kehlata hai/ u me aur hum title song)…. IMHO

      • Shyam Narayanan TK

Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai is by Reena Bhardwaj… and U Me Aur Hum title song is bu Shreya Ghoshal… Rekha Bhardwaj is Vishal Bhardwaj’s wife, whose notable works are Genda Phool (Delhi 6), Darling (7 Khoon Maaf), Piya Jaise Ladoo (Radio), Ranjha Ranjha (Raavan), Ab Mujhe Koi, Badi Dheere Chali (Ishqiya), Beedo, Ranaji (Gulaal) etc..
While Reena Bhardwaj’s notable works include Khili Re (Raavan), Baba Kichu (Baba), Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai (Meenaxi), Naan Ippodhu (Sakkarakatti) etc…

          Thanks for the correction.

        ;;;

      • huzefa jairajpuri

i too feel a lil resemblance to rekha bharadwaj…the sourness in voice is similar…IMHO

  • Sukhada Chaudhary

Recent low, you mean EMAET? Well overall it *was* a low but Gubbare was really nice. About Ishqzaade, what can I say?! I am mindblown! :D

  • Prakash Bala

For me, Amit is unconventional from routine-stereotypic-music! After Iam – Such a blend of nice sounds in Mein Pareshaan! <3 u Amit!

  • tejas

This has got to be the least Amit Trivedi’ish soundtrack so far. Not only the songs sound too much like from the stable of Vishal Bharadwaj, SEL and Salim Sulaiman, all the regular names from the Trivedi-circle are missing. Where is Amitabh Bhattacharya, Shilpa Rao and other names? Also this has got to have the most number of mainstream singers in a Trivedi OST.

    • adithyavijay

I agree. This has got to be the least Amit Trivedi album I like. Where is Aisha, Udaan and where is this? If you ask me, this soundtrack is not even worth 100 words. Bland tune, no surprises, not so great singing with only traces of indian elements in some arrangements, just for the sake of it. I became Pareshan when I listend to Pareshan, it is a pure pop/rock song with indian lyrics, what’s so different in it? I don’t understand.

Sometimes it makes me wonder that soundtracks like Ivan Megharoopan which is rich in our tradition and classical roots is not highlighted and takes back seat, rather a pop/rock dominated soundtracks like this gets his undeserved credits.

      Just my humble opinion…

I think amit trivedi has gone with the theme of the film n the music justifies that…thats wot a music director does n its a great album with Amit Trivedi’s style of music..i believe he has done full justice to whole theme of the movie n hanst lost his touches styles n variations in the track..Ishaqzaade,Aafaton ke Parinde,Pareshaan are all gud n how well he has moulded other songs as well Jhalla Walla..the album is great

    Karthik,
I don’t know what CD covers read but is there a way to double check the credits (apart from internet search)?
I may be wrong but I strongly feel there are two male singers in Aafaton ke parinday and the unfortunate one (yet again) to get missed out in credits is Tochi Raina. I think only the grungy hook is sung by Suraj Jagan, rest is Tochi Raina. Listen to that Haan..haan portion at the beginning of the first antara, thats typical Tochi.

    • milliblog

Quite a few people have mentioned that Divya Kumar sounds a lot like Sukhwinder Singh and Tochi Raina :) There are indeed 2 singers in Aafaton – the second one is Divya Kumar.

      • Jaydeep

I thought Divya Kumar was a female singer doing a little bit of background vocals. Thanks for clarifying.

Pareshaan as a song by itself occupies 60 words in your review :) Is that a record for a single song?

Great album, but not 200 for my tastes. That said, I just love Amit Trivedi and cant be happier when he succeeds and when he comes out with anything. I am waiting for his Owais Hussain film to come out. Hear it has Dev D style stuff.

main pareshaan sounds more like a kailash kher song then Amit Trivedi song.
You seem to be biased when it comes to Amit trivedi….
This is the least likable album of Amit trivedi… not the sound of a movie belonging to a rural bkgrnd, like ishiqiya or to some extent omkara.

  • Rajat Sharma

i dunno whether this review is influenced by past work of amit trivedi.. while i too consider amit trivedi to be the best of the lot out there, ths soundtrack doesn’t deserve second listening except pareshan (which too, i’m afraid trails the lines of girly-rock ballads in fashion in bollywood nowadays)..
    every other song is forgetful..

  • dinesh3708

this, komaram puli, blue and manam kothi paravai are 4 soundtracks i felt you went overboard while reviewing…in most other cases your reviews are pitch-perfect…

  • Sahier Hussain

Hey Karthik, I have been  reading this blog for a while. It’s a quick way to get an idea about the soundtrack. You have done a great job and I admire your commitment coz I know this is not your day job. I know music, like many other things in life, is all about taste and perspective. But even with that in mind, I have to say, you seem biased to certain composers (AR Rahman, Amit Trivedi) and others like Himesh, get slated beyond belief. There is no harm in having favourites but this is not a Rahman fan blog, right?. When you are running blog like this, we expect you to be a bit more objective. If not, the review loses credibility, and the blog loses reader’s trust. Now, I am not a Himesh fan or anything. But I do beleive, he is a decent composer and has given some brilliant tracks. Now, if you say this album is worth 200 words and slate a soundtrack like “Dangerous Ishq”. Now, I know DI is not a “Rockstar”, but it certainly deserves better than NW1W. I know you did a re-review, but it just showed your anti Himesh sentiment. So, my humble request for you would be to, review tracks objectivley keeping composers and singers, out of your mind.
