Billa 2 (Music review), Tamil – Yuvan Shankar Raja

Posted by Karthik

Gangster, beyond the glitzy sound, is annoyingly repetitive and familiar; not to forget the downright silly lyrics. Yedho mayakkam is no different – the template is shockingly stale, with Thirumoorthy’s nadaswaram offering the sole respite. Unakkulle mirugam adds to the steadily escalating woes, but the soundtrack finds its mooring wonderfully in two tracks – Madurai ponnu, the Ottagatha Kattiko 2.0 version that morphs beautifully into a very-Yuvan’ish world music mix and Shweta Pandit’s stunningly serene Idhayam, a Rajaesque melody in a Yuvan package, with magical tabla usage! Yuvan salvages Billa 2’s heavily stylized music only because of these two songs!

Keywords: Billa 2, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Ajith Kumar

Very appropriate review for the soundtrack IMHO…
This is one of the high profile audio releases of this year.

‘Gangster’ inspires heavily from LMFAO Party rock n’ U1 is not at his best here…’Gangster gangster,he’s a monster’  ……better imagination please :(
‘Idhayam’ is simply ethereal and has high repeat value …thumbs up Swetha Pandit ;)
‘Yedho mayakkam’  could easily pass off as 2000′s B grade clubie junk :(
‘Madurai ponnu’ is the ‘mermaid’ of a song…90′s beat as the head n’ some funky 2000′s as the tail …purely for the mass n’ no class here ;|
‘Unakkul mrigam’ does not try to be much musical and could form part of the narrative, hoping so.
‘Billa theme’ is for the fan boys to go crazy, just like the Don theme for Don 2…the originals were better musically ;)
The recording quality is very high.
Yuvan goes down from ‘Mangatha’ days n’ creates a soundtrack which is nowhere near one to die for. The hype surrounding the movie would ensure that the OST flies off shelves but until initial euphoria lasts.
The fact stands that music of Billa 2 is inferior to Billa (2007)
PICK OF THE LOT: ‘Idayam’ has alrady caught me askin’ for more ;)

karthik i guess ur review is one sided and partial, though i agree that this album is nt yuvan’s best,  he has just gone by what the director wants. i dont agree with your review on Manam Kothi paravai which is definitely an ordinary album

I Feel Yuvan Shankar Raja  Is overrated music director of Tamil industry He is no doubt a good singer but As a composer not that much great

Billa 2 is an Perfect example for this see his past 3 albums rajapattai vettai billa  2 nothing is impressive ,He remixes his own tune but tat too not helping again to impress Madurai ponnu Ottagathai kattiko ?? i could nt avoid the thought of gentleman ,A r Could have scored high than yuvan in case if he got a script like this

whatever, rocking album. a 100% increase compared to his previous albums. didn’t like his Vettai and Rajapaatai songs, but this time he nails it. Liking it very much!!

  • Yuva Neshwar

    Awesome album!

A perfect combination of rock, melody, techno, r&b and folk!
Promising album with experimental tunes, sounds and music!

useless album. Yuvan shankar raja can better start assisting his dad and learn music properly,

Has Yuvan matured as a music director .Moving away from the Boom Boom sound Yuvan is famous for albeit not totally .I was surprised with Kazhugu ,Was quite IL’ish as opposed to Yuvan’ish. If someone had made me listen to Idayam and take a guess who the composer would be ?.I would have said anyone but Yuvan . IMO his range is widening and that’s good sign

Listen to the album over and over again and you will see how it grows on you.The songs are quite great. Don’t write it off too quickly.
