Shanghai (Music review), Hindi – Vishal-Shekhar

Posted by Karthik

Bharat mata ki jai, with 6 singers, is an enthusiastically raucous package with biting sarcasm in its lyrics, by Dibakar himself. Imported kamariya is not very different tune-wise, but this one doesn’t register. The utopian Morcha works for Vishal’s lyrics and the anthemic tune. The soundtrack’s highlights are Duaa and Khudaaya – the former, an ambient melody with towering lead vocals by Nandini Srikar, and the latter, a serene tune, led by Shekhar, lovely lyrics by Neelesh Mishra and mesmerizing orchestration and tune changes. Vishnu Sahasranamam is treated with adequate respect. Shanghai is a solid effort from Vishal and Shekhar!

How does it fare compared to Dibakar’s previous films?

I am not a fan of his music sense defined by his 3 earlier films – KKG, OLLO and LSD. LSD did have the funky I can’t hold it any longer, but on an average, I didn’t like music in his films. Shanghai is a superb exception.

I strongly believe LSD is brilliant effort suits exactly what the film needs. How to judge LSD’s music without the film? – its not easy.

Having heard Shanghai now, I should say we have a 180 degree difference in our views about his sense of music. LSD and OLLO any given day over this staid junk by an awfully overrated duo!

Ha ha .. OLLO and LSD gave a new fresh musician in the form of Sneha who has a penchant of turning out different sounds and freshness..
In the case of Shanghai, it is utter disappointment.

I laud Vishal-Shekhar for trying different genres. First Kahaani & now this one. However, this time around results are middling.
Except Duaa nothing else seems to work for me. Its a great melody and Nandini Srikar & Arijit Singh have done wonderful justice to it.

in many of v-s songs, male voice reflects vishals style..arijit in dua,,,and suraj jagan in sadka hua

Agree. And its to an extent where singer starts sounding like the composer himself. Initially, I thought duaa was sung by Vishal.

Did anyone else find Imported Kamariya to be mixture of Ranaji (Gulaal) & Aaya India (Vishal Shekhar’s Cricket song)?

Khudaaya & Duaa are obviously the highlight of the album.
