Saguni (Music review), Tamil – GV Prakash Kumar

Posted by Karthik

Kandha kaara vadai is a competent kuthu with the right dose of engaging mod sounds and rhythmically apt lyrics by Paramu; Shankar Mahadevan is, as usual, perfect. Vella bambaram is a poor and unimaginative rehash of Rahman’s Uppu karuvaadu, while Orambo vandivarudhu’s long-lost twin brother, Pottadhu pathalai works very well as a drunk-kuthu, thanks largely to Velmurugan’s spirited singing. Annachi falls as flat as the politician’s promise it parodies, but Manasellam, despite the gorgeous melody shamelessly aping Rahman again, is a great listen. Saguni sees GV Prakash channeling his inner Harris Jeyaraj, particularly the one who works with director Hari.

Ok…lets get something clear. All tunes by the latest generation are bound to influenced by MS, Ilayaraaja sir and ARR simply because there is no raaga that is left unexplored..Only the arrangements can be altered, never the basic tune. And your review seems to heavily biased. I think its a perfect commercial album. Though, i do agree with most of ur other music reviews, Sorry buddy. dont exactly agree with this one.

Many present day composers, even when they are consciously or subconsciously inspired by greats like Raja, MSV or Rahman, try (try, not ensure, but try) and avoid obvious references. Going by his past work, GVP is more than capable of that too, but I felt he falters in this soundtrack. That won’t take anything away from this soundtrack being a ‘perfect commercial album’, but IMO, it isn’t.

I think tamil nadu needs all these great composers with the sheer brilliance and effort that they put into their work. A resemblance to ARR or IR work should not be discouraged on its face but a rehashing should be met with criticism. We don’t want everybody doing the same stuff to make it a Communist industry but a diverse one. Mellifluousness of HJ despite the same tune with the new sugarcoating is lovely. GVP with his brand of theme (movie) based tunes are appealing close to the heart. And at the helm of affairs ARR and IR interspersing both variety and quality, its a magical period for the music industry. Feel good music is always accepted but with the appropriate sense that the music director puts his heart and soul to his work rather than just delivering a crowd pleaser.

One Thing i am not able to fathom is in all songs You have mentioned as aping Rahman and finally given a verdict that GV is finding Harris within himself  ……  What does it mean …  Do you feel Harris is aping Rahman ??

Yes. Though, in time, he has sorta made it into his signature that people are bored with pointing that out these days.

Hey wow, even I felt the songs sounded like recycled, for once you are agreeing with me. Another HJ emerging, if that is not a good news for Tamil cinema!

Baba Sehgal is so flat in Vella Bambaram. GVP :(

Only hope in Thaandavam & Joker. Still, 3/5 ain’t bad.

milliblog you’ve done its job great! i particularly guess HJ in G.V.P is because megaupload is blocked by S.O.P.A and so he could get any hollywood movies to be inspired by!.hence he has to go back behind A.R.R to sustain in kollywood!may be i’m wrong but this is wat i feel!

When i saw the trailors with Manasellam song it was as if listening to Rhythm movie trailor.. and when i heard more clearly it was a lift of Katrey song! Not nice! Cant call it as being influenced…. but some easy bucks!

Manasellam tune he did already in his earlier telugu movie Ullasahanga Utsahanga. To me it reminds Raja’s “Malaiyoram Mayile” from Oruvar Vaazhum aalayam. This kid is real copy cat.
