Amen (Music review), Malayalam – Prashant Pillai

Posted by Karthik

Aatmavin‘s soulful gospel sound is enticing, given how the composer layers the haunting tune with bare minimum orchestration; the vocal chorus is fantastic! Solomanum Shoshannayum takes the minimalist feel to the next level – for about 2 minutes, the song has no instruments at all, with just Preeti and Shreekumar’s vocals to adorn the lovely melody! Pampara pa pa is the soundtrack’s most eclectic, with an addictive guitar phrase persistently in the background, even as Sopanam Anil and Sopanam Satheesh whip up a captivating tune to go with the frenzied percussion! And yes, Remya Nambeesan tantalizing voice is present too! Lucky Ali’s Malayalam debut, Vattolly seems tailor-made for his characteristic voice, with a fantastic layer of guitar and harmonica-led blues! Karuthiku thithai holds the authentic band sound, but with a distinctly catchy Latin touch! Meen‘s ethereal tune seems to depend solely on Alyssa Mendonsa’s gorgeous voice, but when the music kicks in, however minimal it is, it’s brilliant! Spirit of Amen closes the soundtrack in style, perhaps the most heavy and processed song of the soundtrack, but wonderfully varied in terms of sounds and genres! Lijo Jose Pelliserry and Prashant Pillai hit the jackpot yet again, after City of God!

Hi Karthik, I have been following your blog for years now, since ITWOFS. You are doing a great job. I just have a suggestion. if it is not time consuming, can you post YouTube links or some online portal links for the songs for movies, at least the best ones from the album. Staying in Germany, I find it really difficult to even listen to some of the songs here.

    P.S. I listen to all languages. :D :D :D

I understand :) I started doing that in my monthly lists where I pick the best songs… and started adding YouTube links wherever possible.
