If there’s one recent Tamil film that evoked a rather loud ‘What the f***?’ from me, it is Naan Mahaan Alla. Here’s a film that has everything going for it but actually ends up making a hapless mishmash of it all! The template seems largely similar to Vetrimaran’s vastly-superior Polladhavan, starring Dhanush. The stark lower [...]

I recently came across a few tweets by @allusirish, on sci-fi films in India. Our prev gen of filmmakers were better of than us. “Karuda Rathrikal” starring MGR, Bhanumathi was an alien visitation film in 1960.. (Link) Satyajit Ray & Columbia Pics attempted 2 make a film “The Alien” in 1960 with Marlon Brando based [...]

In Indian films, She’s Out Of My League would be that film which has a side-kick, comedian as the hero. And average-Joe, Jay Baruchel, looks even below average through-out the film. His goofball antics only add to that aura…err, or lack of it. I’d perhaps give Kirk (Jay) a hard 4, if I were to [...]

Someone compared it to Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, on Twitter, while OPEN magazine called it a ‘stupid comedy’ and gave it a severe drubbing. Those extreme reactions literally forced me to opt for ‘Tere Bin Laden’ over the much more pressing Udaan and Inception, both of which I’ll watch…eventually…some day! I liked Tere Bin Laden. [...]

Imagine…you are in a fancy restaurant with a massive spread of yummy food in front of you. Your favorite, say, a Kahlua Dessert, is in the corner. You love it so much that you usually go for it first! But, what you do would seem strange, because you do not reach for your favorite first…you [...]

To be fair, I started watching A Sargunam’s debut, Kalavani, loaded with expectations. This was one film that was touted as a sleeper hit and got massively positive reviews almost everywhere. So, it may be the expectations or the nature of the film’s screenplay – it was boring, for large parts. That however does not [...]

If I were to sum up what went wrong in Raavan, it’d perhaps be, ‘Ramayan killed the Raavan star’. In other words, nothing is wrong with Raavan – the audience’s expectation of it being Ramayan’s retelling is the problem. There is enough intelligence pumped by Mani into this film but unfortunately the country is very [...]

As I finished watching Vincenzo Natali’s Splice, the only overwhelming thought in my mind was, ‘Why?’. As in, ‘Why would Guillermo del Toro back this film?’. del Toro is the ONLY reason I even saw this film. Um, sorry, there was another thought too. That this film was almost entirely conceived only because much of [...]

Rajneeti is one of the few movies that I recall getting almost all round positive reviews and that was one of the reasons why I chose to see it too. The film is racy and riveting for most parts and Prakash Jha does a good job in converting the Mahabharat thread into contemporary Indian politics [...]

I have this terrible habit of postponing to watch certain films…for no apparent reason. Magadheera was one of them and I saw it just last night, almost after an year of its release. Now, I have read many reviews about the film – most were ecstatic and many were reasonably satisfied giving it 3.5 out [...]
