Players (Music review), Hindi – Pritam Chakraborty

Jis jagah pe khatam is one of those few songs where the chorus vocals completely rule over the main tune; understated, but immensely catchy. Jhoom jhoom‘s ambitious backgrounds actually hold a fairly retro-styled tune – engagingly sung by Ritu Pathak; as are Siddharth Basrur and Arijit Singh’s techno variants! Yashita Yashpal confidently rocks the templatized, [...]

Sonu sounds a bit tame in the title song’s remix, but RDB’s catchy embellishments help, but the house mix goes horrendously overboard. Nouman Javaid’s Charha de rang has 4 versions and all carry an inherent folksy lilt; particularly the ones with Rahat and Rahul Seth’s lead vocals. Anu Malik’s Chamki jawani and Tinku jiya are [...]

NW1W. Well, except for Ashu’s Kenha hai, where the composer does make an honest effort to get out of his mediocrity. I suppose Mughda Godse can relax – her white-bikini scene is still the only highlight of this film; this music is highly unlikely to topple that. Keywords: Bobby Deol, Mughda Godse, White Bikini

Toshi-Sharib’s (not TOCHI, please note!!) title song is a familiar 90s lilt and is indeed easy on the ear, while Babbu Maan’s techno-infused dard in Rab na kare is catchy too. Monty’s Kubul seems like an ambitious attempt to sound deep and nice, but simply doesn’t. Shaan’s dependable vocals power the optimistically enthusiastic Aaj aasmaan [...]

Ek is a rather unusual soundtrack – it has 4 tracks, out of which 3 are composed by Pritam and the 4th is a recreation of a traditional Punjabi folk song, thankfully credited as much in the CD. DJ Phukan’s re-imagining of Sona lagda with Shaswati’s vocals and a lilting tune is pretty neat while [...]

Music review: Villu (Tamil – Devi Sri Prasad)

Hey rama rama has Vijay talking political propaganda – in an inane, stale package. Baba Sehgal’s Jalsa and Mamta Mohandas’ Daddy mummy retain their hyper-addictive Telugu original’s (Jalsa and Shankardada Zindabad’s Aakelesthe) feel, while Are you crazy is a thankfully short and useless songlet. Dheemthanakka thillana is Devi’s assembly-line nonsense with a robotic rhythm and [...]

Sajid Wajid regurgitate their assembly-line Punjabi music in the mellow Mannata and the so-called dancy Makhna – Sonu and Sukhwinder going through the drill respectively in these archaic tracks. Monty’s Wat’s up my bro is partly interesting – for the guitar work and its fusion with assorted Indian instruments like the tabla and sarod at [...]

Music review: Dostana (Hindi – Vishal Shekhar)

Dostana is one of those mixed bag soundtracks that has Vishal and Shekhar sticking to their familiar, tried and tested sounds. So, while we have a bouncy Jaany kyun with fab vocals by Vishal, we also have a terribly cringe-worthy Desi girl! Saleem’s Ma da laadla is good fun with catchy hooks, while Shut up [...]

Music review: Chamku (Hindi, Monty Sharma)

Aaja milke’s tune is haunting and even that seemingly standard rhythm builds up quite impressively. Shail and Shreya Ghosal are in fabulous form crooning this one. The techno-pathos in Bin daseyaa and Kithe jawa is tiresome, despite those punchy orchestration. Even Dukh ke badri is rather monotonous with false pretensions of an ornate sound. Gola [...]
