Engirunthu mulaikkudhindha is a wonderful combination of a gorgeous tune and perfect orchestration – fabulously sung by Hariharan and Shreya. Poonkothai is a raunchy mix of familiar sounds and loops; well sung by Sangeetha Rajeshwaran, but nothing more. With Maranthuvidu, Imman aims for Raja-style violins and within that Mayamalavagowlai structure he gets most of it [...]

Saattai (Music review), Tamil – D.Imman

The kids’ chorus consisting of Haripriya and Sai Venkat join Ramesh Vinayagam and create sheer magic in Jada jada jaada, aided superbly by Yugabharathi’s gritty lyrics. Imman’s soaring and impactful use of the chorus and guitar deserves special mention! Shreya Ghoshal rocks the dulcet Sahaayane (barring Pookku and Thakku, in place of Pookka and Thakka; [...]

Kumki (Music review), Tamil – D.Imman

Yella oorum works at a functional level as a hero intro song. Onnum puriyala is spectacular; moves from serene to the more enthusiastic, percussion-led portion incredibly well; Imman’s vocals is brilliant as is the quality of orchestration. Haricharan’s Ayayayo is no different – one heck of a sweeping melody, again orchestrated brilliantly. Sollitaaley is comparatively [...]

Amara (Music review), Tamil – D.Imman

MLR Karthikeyan rules like he always does, in Atha magalayum; the use of the folk sound fused with the more mod additions works well! Simmakallu sees Chinmayi is a mighty new avatar and she pulls off the intoxicated, item’ish sound wonderfully well, while Priya Himesh’s Koorapodava is a delightful tune, superbly orchestrated by Imman. Theeyum [...]

Dang dang, featuring Maalavika and Saisharan’s vocals builds on its simple, folk’ish tune wonderfully well, backed by catchy, resonant rhythms where the composer adds finely nuanced modern sounds that add to the overall effect. Jal jal jal osai gets the tune + backgrounds combination perfectly well too; excellent work by Imman and the singers, Aalaap [...]

Muthal Idam (Music review), Tamil – D.Imman

That simplistic, soulful melody in Inga vaanthey is beautifully timed for its catchy rhythm. Aiythaaney goes many levels further; really affecting folk’ish tune imaginative orchestrated. Vijay Yesudas’ Thindaduren too is a haunting listen; that ‘Adi paarvai’ hook works brilliantly! The title song‘s harmony is impressive but as a song, it doesn’t register, while Pappara pappara [...]

Mynaa (Music review), Tamil – D.Imman

Shaan’s diction sounds awkward in the title song, but tune-wise, the composer has a winner! Kichu kichu is modeled blatantly along Rahman’s Barso re, but the assortment of vocals and catchy chorus pieces help. Neeyum naanum‘s rock outlook belies Imman’s shoddy past and is mighty impressive, much like Jingu chikka, an earthy and immensely rhythmic [...]

Vilai (Music review), Tamil – D.Imman

Vilaye un vilayenna sounds incongruous to start with, but the brooding lyrics gel gradually with the club’by backgrounds; Haricharan’s vocals are an asset, while the composers go all out in the interludes. The pathos version, in comparison, is tepid. Nithyasree is given a shockingly lewd and risqué track, Manmadhakaadu, that merely uses the Theepidikka template [...]

Saarangiyil‘s soothing, languid and ambient arrangements and beautiful vocals by Kalyani are scintillating! Gala gala, despite its monotonous pattern, has a catchy charm of its own, helped largely by the hyper- enthusiastic singing by Jassie Gift and Roshni. One two three‘s lyrics are plain stupid, but that Arabic’esque tune is quite skilfully handled by Imman, [...]

Azhagu azhagu is short and sweet; Bela Shende sounds great but the lyrics seem forced. Kacheri kacheri is typical Imman material – stock rhythm, albeit catchy, and a tune that starts well buts ends tamely. Kadavule‘s both the versions are interesting – Palash Sen’s (Euphoria) Tamil debut in the slower, Indian’ish version is confidently assuring, [...]
