Karthik valiantly tries his best to salvage O nanna kanda, but the dull tune just refuses to offer any solace. Naanu neenu is even worse – a painfully bland template that Raja offered us back in his peak when songs of this nature were in vogue; but for its sparkling second interlude, this song falls [...]

Sonu’s extremely mellifluous Udisuve (and the similarly-tuned Ninnaya, by Shreya) offers a tinge of sadness and Andean flute, while Arey re re pancharangi gets its catchy Latino sound perfectly! The interestingly structured Life ishtene espouses the don’t-care outlook in a curiously addictive package! Hudugaru beku is a typical Pritam-style song but does work thanks to [...]

After the recession is almost over, allegedly, we have an ode…in the form of Banthu banthu recession! It’s mundane and pedestrian, as a song, anyway. Gelluba gelluba is the stuff of legendary bad songs – one outdated Middle Eastern sound that seems entirely inane. Ivanu yaaravva, with its 80s sound is even more annoying, while [...]

Music review: Gokula (Kannada – Mano Murthy)

Karthik and Ritisha’s techno-dance track Maja maadoke and Baruve odi odi offer a pretty neat start to the soundtrack – Mano’s arrangements and the catchy tunes are groovy enough to warrant tapping your feet. Sonu’s soulful cry in Neene helu nannadaavudu is strictly average while One by two jeevana is perfectly attitude-tuned; Tippu doing his [...]

The title song, Innu anisuthide, Naa ninagaage, Baa nodu gelathi and Ideye ninage work well with their soaked-in-love feel, even if they serve as an overdose of similar sounding tunes. Vega bandiruve’s playful, catchy tune is likeable, but the stand-out loudness of Haadantu namma is jarring in an otherwise soft album. Ninna hindeyaa has an [...]

Aalangisu’s enthusiastic melody and arrangement is reminiscent of Mungaru Male – in a positive way, that is! In Tumbali, he gives Shreya a lively tune and she pulls it off well, while the Sonu gets a soulful melody in Maleya haniyalli – charming tune with the orchestration bordering Ilayaraja’s! Amma ninna’s tune and interludes are [...]

Distantly echoing Mungaru Male’s Anisuthide, the title song, with its music-less feel, is very tuneful; thanks to Vikas and Lakshmi’s heartfelt vocals. Naa naguva with Shreya Ghoshal; Shreya’s duet with KK, Kanna haniyondige and Sonu’s Ello maleyaagideyanu, that starts with the title song are all unusually mellow and soaked in the conventional Mano Murthy style [...]

Yeno agide and Ondu ninna are painfully 90s Anu Malik material. Even Aadesh Srivastava! What are they doing in Mano Murthy’s repertoire? Gelathi neenu may be using the ever-dependable Sonu-Shreya combination but the tune has lost its dependability long back, since it has been over-used by Mano anyway. The title song is an embarrassing string [...]

Music review: Haage Summane (Kannada – Mano Murthy)

Odi bandenu harks back to Mungaru Male’s formula and is merely soporific, while Naanenu nambodilla is straight out of a 80s Hindi film – terribly outdated. Sonu’s title song works with its charming, hummable tune. Haadonave is crude and annoying, but despite the silly rhythm and conventional accordion, Oorella koogi has an innocent, likeable ring [...]

Bombaat (Kannada, Mano Murthy)

With a childishly simple tune and silly lyrics it’s easy to dismiss Strawberry kenne, but composer Mano Murthy packs it with easy-on-the-ears arrangements while Rajesh and Supriya impress with their renditions. The Sonu-Jayanth-Mano combination works again in Maathinalli helalarenu, again with a mild, Latin melody – Shreya Ghoshal’s version too is very listenable, with different [...]
