Racha (Music review), Telugu – Mani Sharma

Mani Sharma skilfully tones down the Bappi’ness of Gang Leader’s Vaana vaana in its remix, and maintains a nice blend of Bollywood and Telugu sound. Dillaku dillaku and Oka paadam are shockingly similar to Harris Jayaraj’s material – the former owes it to Anniyan’s Randakka, while the latter, despite the harmonica similarity, holds a lot [...]

Omkareswari is that perfect filmy blend of massy devotional frenzy, while Amabadari works its charm using rhythmic verses to great effect! Baba Sehgal’s In the night is embarrassingly cheesy, even as Chaitra’s enticing vocals tries desperately to prop an otherwise weak Nachavura. Ditto with Chiranjeeva – ennui-inducing, for most parts. It’s in Vasudhara that the [...]

Adnan Sami sounds different but good in the charming piano and violin fusion, Infatuation! Sans the violin, Tippu’s Dhooram achieves a similar high, with an even more engaging melancholic tune! Harini’s Thiru thiru uses the carnatic base cleverly like a consummate K.Balachander concept! Aho Balu and A Square are standard foot-tapping Devi material with an [...]

Siruthai (Music review), Tamil – Vidyasagar

If you ignore the short, middling and trite Thalaattu, the rest of the soundtrack is one extended item number! Keeravani’s hyper-catchy hook from the original’s College Papala makes only a fleeting appearance as the prelude to Naan romba; Vidyasagar’s new version is shockingly unimaginative. Chellam vada is no different – dreadfully derivative and outdated. Azhagha [...]

Music review: Sura (Tamil – Manisharma)

Naan nadanthal works only because of its appealing, stylish rhythms even though the lyrics are beyond mundane. Siragadikkum nilavu is archaic Manisharma material, with rudimentary catchiness, while Thamizhan veera thamizhan is loud, pointless and silly. The composer reuses his Telugu Billa chartbuster, Bommayi ,as Thanjavoor jillaakaari; Hemachandra repeats his role and infuses life into the [...]

Yuvan tries his Sandakozhi-sound again in Adada mazhaida, besides inserting his favorite folk bit he has already overused in Where is the party – unnecessarily. Despite the punchy rhythm, Suthudhe’s tune is a complete letdown, but Poongatre works pretty well, with a catchy tune reminiscent of Jeniffer Lopez’s Waiting for tonight. The composer truly scores [...]

Naan mozhi arindhen tops the bad-singer-choice list, with Suresh Wadkar irritatingly laboring in Tamil, spoiling a respectable tune. Udit is next, massacring Venpanju – another tune that could have been better with just Karthik singing it, while Hariharan’s Suthudhu is just too standard a tune. Kaatru Pudhidhaai is considerably better, barring the Aao milo chalen [...]

Music review: Ayan (Tamil – Harris Jeyaraj)

Pala pala’s pace and appealing rhythms makes up for the slightly routine tune, while Mahati and Harish Raghavendra rock the hushed, ambient melody, Nenje nenje, that is soaked in the Harris Jeyaraj style of music. Karthik’s Vizhi moodi is yet another trademark Harris number – the interesting backgrounds and the lovely tune are highly infectious. [...]

Egire is all attitude with some groovy guitar, while the cleverly tuned Aanandama alternates between somber and playfully rhythmic sections, with a tinge of melancholy peeking too! Abacha is conventionally Telugu-styled, almost a la Manisharma, but the title song, with mischievous percussions and addictive hook, is rocking! Evade Subramanyam continues in the same vein and [...]

Appa amma vilayattu is at best a Srikanth Deva track, something the massively-built composer conjures up while sleeping, totally detached. And Hey vetri vela only asserts that belief – a typical Perarasu’esque Srikanth Deva number!! Hey rosu rosu is no better, Manisharma digging into his Telugu-styled masala repertoire, while the composer uses his actually impressive [...]
